Water-related pathing questions.
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:30:02 pm »

Hi there. I decided to have an entrance which involves entering a cave, going down 1 zlvl into a partially submerged hallway (4/7), which then leads to ramps leading up into my main fort. So far, this isn't working out  :P. Dwarves refuse going into the partially submerged pathway, and whenever given tasks which involve going through it, the task is canceled due to dangerous terrain. Now, my seven dwarves are slowly learning how to swim because they still are in the submerged tunnel for a short amount of time before they cancel the task. Will they be able to happily wade through the water once they become better swimmers, or is this a hopeless wish?

Many thanks for all help given!

The pathfinder doesn't like water deeper than...I don't recall if it's 1/7 or 2/7.  Since it really is the pathfinder that's broken, you can't do a whole heck of a lot about it.

4/7 is the lowest water level that trains a dwarf in swimming, so 3/7 should be the level that they can path though. I know they can get though 1/7 and 2/7 no problem. Incidentally, 5/7 is the water level that causes dwarves to flip out and cancel everything.

This is all true, but 2/7 is the level that will cause your dwarves to flip out and refuse to build things that are submerged a few thousand times will trying to build a 4 square damn.

I'm not bitter though.  Especially when the dwarf who did the thousand cancellations then finishes the wall while standing on the water side and if I want him to live I either have to hope he can deconstruct it before drowning, or get a miner over there to expand the are to be damned.

Quick note: the river is the thing being dammed, the mason who built the wall is the one who's damned.

Why does my adventurer keep crying?
Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

In my experience, dwarves will path through anything lower than 7/7, then cancel if it is higher than 3/7, which is very annoying, because they tend to become stuck in places where the water level is between 3/7 and 4/7.
