Also there isnt really much to talk about, its a mini map.

Actually, there is:

:) Minimap could use lot of improvement - most notably, less of ascii. It hurts its usefullness a lot when you try to put whole map into ~ 10x10 characters - that ends usually pretty rough.

I've never used it for that very reason, it just doesn't give enough information.
I could see it being useful someday, but for the time being, I'm going to continue just zooming way way out (40d16 ftw!).

How do you do that? I could really use a Friend&Foe mode and Wagon Access mode

I almost never use it, but when I do it's precisely during embark, so it wouldn't make sense to me to remove it by default.

I embark, scan with the map, turn it off, and leave it off for just about ever.

I use it to gauge my wood consumption.

My only comment is that it would be nice to shove the minimap into the blank space below the command list when at higher Y spaces.

The minimap would be more useful if you could toggle it to take up 2/3 space like you can with the commands screen, right now it's just to cramped.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Yes! Or something like that, so that you can see it but have more space for gameplay.

Agreed, the exceedingly low resolution makes it nearly useless.  If its resolution went up and it had some 'modes' to display different sets of data (terrain, unit color coded by alignment, zones and buildings) it might become useful.  The ability to move the main window by clicking or dragging a box on mini map would also be great, so great in fact that EVERY SINGLE SINGLE GAME SINCE 1989 has done that.

I use it constantly, and would be a complete mess if I didn't have access to it. I cannot play without it, infact.

I suspect it involves Photoshop or GIMP.

I don't think so. The minimap isn't so much a problem as that it wastes an extremely valuable, and stupidly scarce, resource: window space.

I think DF should have a resizeable window. I can only see a tiny part of my fortress at a time, and even less if I have my minimap up.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

DF does have a resizeable window.  You are running the current d# series, right?

I think DF should have a resizeable window.

Assuming you mean setting the sizes of the game screen/menu/minimap in relation to each other (as opposed to the actual window itself; there are ini settings and d16 for that), then yes, that's a decent idea.
