The first time I ever got nuked in SMAC was by the Gaians.

It was one of their cities too, that I had captured from them just a few turns previously!

Oh!! Do use nuke, plenty of them. For once a game makes them truly devastating (biggest deception in civs game... after the lack of unit customization). If you feel it's "ungaian" to use nuke, install/use expansion and mix them with fungal missile: Tada! Balance of the Planet preserved... if somewhat scorched  ;D

A + C would be nice together. But if you take the "Mindworm rush" challenge, it might be better to play with Alien Crossfire, otherwise you'll have no artillery, which isn't a huge issue but still nice to have available.

Ok so since the Gaians and Spartans are tied I'm going to play as the Gaians, difficulty 4, using mindworms as offensive units and playing on Alien Crossfire for the extra technologies. (Aquafarm + Kelp + base in the middle of the freshwater sea = big pop rush :D) I'll still use all the original factions though. Anyhow first short update in a bit.

Ok, not a short update in a bit, I'm having problems, basically when I take screenshots and save them in paint they get horribly discoloured and disfigured. Does anyone know an alternative method? As I understand it you can get programs that take and automatically save screenshots for you, however I don't know where to get one of these from.

FRAPS is what I use.

Either Fraps doesn't like SMAC, or SMAC doesn't like Fraps. I can't get it to work in-game. Hopefully Jreengus will find a way to make it work while I sit here trying to talk SMAC into cooperating.

I have never figured out a way to take screenshots in SMAC(X). I get the same issues.

... hmmm, maybe if you windowed it with something like DXWnd you could use print screen?

I've had moderate success taking screenshots using Snapshot (http://bluefive.pair.com/snapshot.htm) but ran into the same problem than Jreengus: colors all messed up and such. Changing my screen resolution to 1024x768 with 8 bits color depth *sighs* fixed that however. I might try finding another program because I really hate snaphot; its window keeps popping on top everytime you take a screenshot. However, I can't be bothered with that today, so maybe that one will do for now?

After struggling to get FRAPS to even take a screen shot of anything I gave up Snapshot screwed up the colours, and I can't put my colour depth to 8 my minimum is 16. However a Google search turned up Snagit which works nicely. It's a 30 day free trial though so we'll have to see what happens when my time is up. Anyhow I may or may not have an update for you today, I'm kind of busy (exams  :() but hopefully by tomorrow I'll have the first update.

Oh yeah, I had to use Nvidia control panel to switch to 8 bit. Windows XP and anything after doesn't offer 8 bit. When/If I get a chance, I'll look into trying to get Fraps to work; talking SMAC into cooperating didn't work, but maybe beating it into submission will.

You could ask Wimdit what he did for his LP of this game...

UPDATE WHOOO!!! (Yes I know it's small, but it's all I have time for)

Note, the prologue picks up shortly after  Lal makes it to the captain's landing pod in the story Journey to Centauri. For those who don't want to download it (it's free) a brief summary:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Prologue
Colonel Santiago allowed herself a brief smile as Voki entered the room He quickly released from her cell before saluting sharply.
"Status?"
"We have maintained control over the landing pod despite assaults by Yang's security forces, he seems to have taken the best of them to his own pod, and those left behind have not had time to recover from the after effects of cryo sleep. One entry to the shuttle has been sealed and we await only you to seal the final one."
"Very well then, destiny awaits, at ease soldier and follow me."

Once Santiago stepped into the landing pod she turned and immediately punched in the code to seal the last remaining tunnel to it.
Turning to her troops she congratulated them. "Well done soldiers, the new world awaits us, relax while you can the struggle ahead will be hard."
Turning back to the console she entered the code to detach from the ship, after several minutes she re-entered it. Still nothing happened. In desperation she activated the ships thrusters but apart from a torturous groaning the landing pod remained unmoved, just as she shut off the thrusters a sudden jolt sent everyone in the pod flying. Outside the explosives boomed in quick succession each explosion releasing a pod and shaking all the remaining ones about; when the Spartan pod was released the jolt sent her straight across the room, but as she climbed to her feet she new that she was on the way to a new world. A world where military discipline would rule and prevent the mistakes made on earth.

Also I'm not the best writer in the world, so don't expect massively good story telling, feel free to provide constructive criticism.
