Lets Play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:43:03 pm »

EDIT: I got the expansion working, if you want I can play that, if so I'll lock this thread and create a new one where you can vote for which factions you want to be in the game and post to vote for difficulty/player race. (Curse Bay12s lack of multi polls!)

SMAC, as I hope you all know, is a gem of a game based on the civilization series, I can't be bothered to go into detail so instead have a wiki link.

As well as voting for the faction please post to vote on the difficulty, I can't remember the names so I'll just number them 1-6, one being easiest. On this scale I'm used to playing at 3, I'm also used to playing either the university, the gaians or the believers, so if you want to up the difficulty I'd advise that I play as one of those, otherwise a swift death may follow.

I currently have the expansion but installing it just seems to muck up the game, I can try and fix it if you want or else I'll just play the original game.

I make no promises on that difficulty level. If I survive to research industrial base I will be happy.

I vote for Gaians, and tons of worms... gotta love mindraping worms  :P

As for difficulty, my vote would depend on the planet size. Difficulty 4 for small planet, 3 for medium and 5 for large. If you ask why the 4 - 3 - 5, it's simply because that's what I used to play with and found the most "balanced" yet challenging.

Oh and I don't really care the expansion. I hate the new human factions (which are poorly balanced with the original), find the aliens/new lifeforms somewhat uninteresting. Some of the new tech are nice, but nothing so nice that I couldn't do without.

P.S.  Damnit, if you start a LP I'll want to reinstall the game... it always happens when I read a good LP.

But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Gaians all the way! Difficulty 4 could be fun, but if you could tell a better story with difficulty 3 then go for it!

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Looks like it'll be Gaians on difficulty 4 currently, so assuming we don't get any last minute votes how about some extra rules? Essentially if you want me to do one these post to cast a vote for it.

A) Respect the fungus! Absolutely no fungus removal, in fact if I deem an area low on fungus I shall plant more.
A)i) No forests! Forests destroy the fungus when they spread, to preserve planets ecosystem I must minimalise my impact, thus I shall refrain from introducing earth plants in an uncontrolled manor. (This one is likely to make the game a lot harder as forests are pretty much the tile base improvement being quick to implement, they give minerals energy and nutrients and with a tree farm give enough nutrients to support the worker working them.)

B)Respect the wildlife! Absolutely no attacking native wildlife unless it is absolutely necessary., so while I can attack mind worms that come near my base and threaten my formers whilst exploring I'll have to detour around them.

C)Zerg Mindworm rush! I can only use mindworms/locusts/isles as attack units, my bases can be defended by normal units but when it comes to offense it must be mindworms.

D)i)No War! We love peace and flowers and peace. War is never justified! I must always accept any equal terms peace I'm offered and attempt to negotiate peace, no declaring war.

ii) Kill the defilers of planet! The exact opposite, I must fight tooth and nail to protect planet, if I'm not in a war then I must immediately start one (I'll cut myself some slack for the first few turns mind you). Peace can only be accepted when they fully surrender.

E) No nukes! Planetbusters harm planet too much, I must never build them.

So if any of those appeal to you say so, also feel free to throw in your own better ones but try to make them logical for the Gaians.

EDIT: Spartans got another vote, if in the morning someone other than the Gaians is highest then I'll write up some more optional rules for them, otherwise I'll start the game using whatever of these optional rules are most popular.

I'll change my vote from the Hive to the Gaians, for the sake of democracy reigning supreme.  The blood Gods must be appeased!

Max Difficulty Always!  Six to the Max!

And of course you can't use nukes/planetbusters as Gaians...then again that would be funny if you did...

About war and peace: If you want to play like the computer plays the Gaians, you'll strive for peace, except against the despoilers of Gaia...Which means constant war against the biggest environmental abusers with cheeky peace treaties on everyone else.  The AI of Gaians tends to be schizoid...
