One way roads
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:01:33 am »

Hi all,

I have several 'highways' connecting different parts of my fortress. On them, dwarves often have to avoid each other, cutting into travel efficiency. I was wondering if it was possible to designate one way roads / tunnels somehow so I can streamline my fortress' traffic?

Much obliged,

Sounds good, but probably has been mentioned before, I was also thinking that roads could serve as preliminary targets for wagons, so that you would have a chance to open doors or whatever as they approached. Being one-way would make it easier to designate an end point for them to reach before giving up...

:P Hm, Maybe you could use one-way ramps, so dwarves can only path in the one direction?

Currently there is noway to assign a road to be one direction (aside what what mentioned.) A couple things you can do to help traffic flow, especially thu high traffic areas is to make sure those halls are at least 3 tiles wide. Set up traffic designations for those areas (d>o>) I've found that in a three wide hall setting the edges to be high  traffic (d>o>h) while the center "lane" is  left at normal cause dwarves to stick to the sides of the hall and jump to the middle lane rather than crawl over each other, after awhile they will settle into one side of the hall going one way and another side the opposite - for the most part.

this divided dwarf highway idea is brilliant; i'm going to try it out next fort i make. thanks!

Good idea! Trying it out now :)

If the center was set lower than the sides, wouldn't the dwarves stick to the center and use the sides to pass around incoming dwarves?

There is an engraving of three dwarves in a dining room. The third dwarf is a soaper.

High traffic designations have a lower pathing cost than normal traffic designations.

There was no confusion there. The stated suggestion is that more dwarves travel on the sides with some dwarves jumping to the middle.
Foxbyte asked why not make all the dwarves travel in the centre and dodge to the sides.

I suspect that it is better if they do not dodge at all...

In a hallway thats 4+ tiles wide that wouldnt be much of an issue I think, but for me, I tend to keep to three wide halls giving me one tile in the middle for traffic to flow both ways which if I recall right seems to work about as well as not having any traffic designations at all. I could be wrong tho its been a long time since I tried it so I'll try it in my current fort once the pop gets up enough to make a noticable difference and report back. Probably tomorrow or the next day as I dont have much playtime tonight.
