Dwarf Fortress (40d) doesn't work on Windows 7 - at all
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:07:06 pm »

So I've seen similar threads, but with remarkably different problems. Mostly it's bad framerates, etc.

However, my problem is that Dwarf Fortress simply refuses to operate at all.

It will pop up the window, play the first few notes of the intro, and then freeze up and crash. The window never shows me any sort of graphics; it only plays music. It then fails utterly, as I've said.

I tried to run "compatibility mode," but no compatibility setting I could figure out functioned. I tried checking my graphics drivers; they were intact. (I'm not quite sure why I did this, in retrospect, but hey, better than not.) Anyone else have any ideas? I just can't figure out why it's not functioning.

Odd side-note: This software does a very similar thing. I've never run it functionally, since there's no Macintosh port and Windows 7 just refuses to make it run, but it seems to do the same thing.

Anybody have any ideas?

Dude, you don't want to be messing around with imperial assloads.  The conversion rate to horseloads is atrocious.

Did you install it to C:\Program Files?

If so, you'll have to put it somewhere else - since DF writes to files within its installation folder, it will not get along nicely with the system folder protection in Windows Vista/7.

Also, are your video drivers the ones that were installed with Windows 7? If so, ditch them and download up-to-date ones from your video card vendor's site.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You could run it from a folder on a desktop (that's what I do).

Installing the official drivers for your card MAY work.

I don't believe it'd be a compatibility issue.

Are you running 40D16? If not give that a try. This link... http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php

Is Mike Maydays all-in-one download for 40D16, graphic/tileset and the catmouth fix.

It's not in C:\Program Files, it's just booting around my desktop.

Video drivers are the official things. Just... doesn't work.

Tried D16, didn't function either. Dunno if this is the same thing. I'll try it.

Does anything appear in the error log?

Video drivers are the official things. Just... doesn't work.

Being "official" isn't good enough.  You need the latest drivers.  This is especially important on Windows 7, since many manufacturers are still fixing the bugs in their "official things."

This.  DF runs fine on my W7 machine.

First try to run in adminstrator mode.
next update drivers or place it on C: or whatever you use.

btw i think the desktop is also protected by the magical w7 permission shit.

Yeah, I have a separate Games folder under user/documents, and I turn off the shitty UAC type deals in control panel.

Both of my win7 machines have no trouble running DF so far, so it's definitely doable.

Ah, okay. All of these are things to check.

Note: These are the drivers that, y'know, came with the card. I guess that doesn't mean much anymore, though. Have to look into that. Thanks.

Final note: I tried it in a folder in my documents. Still non-functional.

While better than the Windows "make it work, Plug'n'Play" driver, it is 99% likely to not be the most current version.

Checked the websites, made Windows try to update it, everything's convinced it's the latest.

Never checked the error log, stupidly enough...
