2d help
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:07:20 pm »

We got this snazzy version of DF with multiple Z levels and a new update on the horizon, but I decided to take a poke at the older version

Trying to irrigate land so that I can grow stuff has proven mist perplexing. I can make channels and floodgates and stuff, but then the water just sits in the channel. Was wondering just how I'm supposed to go about irrigating

I believe that placing a floodgate at the end of the channel that you want it to flood *into*, and then opening it will have the effect that you want. Be sure to box off the area with doors etc, lest a tragic accident occur :)

I prefer putting the two floodgates right next to each other in a short tunnel.

You do need to connect one floodgate before building the other, but it saves having to mess about with channels. Leave some expansion room as well. I'm not sure if building destroyers can destroy floodgates from the water, but once a floodgate is removed it leaves a channel you can't build on.

And make sure that water from a floodgate never reaches the river or anything directly connected to it. What Huin is talking about isn't just dwarven death on a massive scale, but a flood you will clear only by doing a bunch of complicated stuff that you might not even be able to pull off.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Floodgates? Bah. Dig out all the rock beside the river and wait for a flood. Mass-scale irrigation without any of the fiddliness :D Subsequent floods can be a minor irritation in that farmers and fisherdwarves (and woodcutters if you're cutting down tower-caps growing in the muddy rock) may be caught in the flood water and taken downriver where they will probably then drown (unless they end up on a bridge further down), but just remember that they're expendable and can be replaced ;)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.
