I'm gonna call it a feature, since it makes perfect sense. ;D

In the context of the game it would make more sense for them to go berserk by the unhappy thoughts caused, which is common enough. Also: Because it's possible to become enraged while being punished for crimes, it might also be possible to go into a combat trance, which makes even less sense.

Yeah, uh, that still makes perfect sense.  Please retitle your thread to "Not a bug" so that Toady won't have to read it.

I wouldn't think being punished for crimes and willingly accepting it would count as combat, so why should dwarves get combat buffs during it?

Consider it a limit of the current system.

The guard is, after all, punching the "criminal" in various places. The game can't help but consider that combat.

Because getting punched pisses people off whether it's justified or not -- hence "enraged" -- and anyway I'm curious what makes you think they're "willingly accepting it."

Although the Martial Trance thing is a bit odd.

Although the Martial Trance thing is a bit odd.

That's just supposition as far as I can tell.  A martial trance only occurs when the creature is being actively targeted by multiple enemies, which would be odd in a punishment situation (unless the dwarf went berserk, which probably precludes trances anyway).

I'm still curious what's odd about creatures getting angry when beaten up.

Cheeetar's looking at it purely as a combat buff, apparently, rather than the guy getting angry because he's being thumped.

Exactly.
I'd treat it as a bug inasfar as it's probably inadvertant, and could be implemented as a feature better by, e.g. providing for criminals to try to escape justice, get into fights with the officer of the law, and so on. Which would lead to behaviour such as being enraged which would be perfectly acceptable.

Also, I think you have to be the target of multiple enemies to get a martial trance, so that couldn't happen since you only have one officer assigned to punishing a dwarf.

The thing is that enrage doesn't really work that way: creatures with a relatively high (read: not low) "anger" personality characteristic have a chance to get enraged when struck, or when wounded to a certain extent, or whatever. I don't know the specifics, but it's something along those lines.

So it's perfectly fine that the enrage effect kicks in when the guy's been beaten up, as he is just being struck like he would be in combat. And yeah, it's probably inadvertant, but I don't see how else the beatings would be managed (is it really worth implementing a check to make sure this doesn't occur? Surely it just adds flavour at the moment, and can be expanded upon when it's convenient?).

I can see this becoming a bit of a problem with how tough some crafters get, especially how I double-duty my Engravers as Masons, and the general tendency of using lowest-caliber fighters as guards to save on wounding said crafters.

Remember that even as early as the next version skills will only improve attributes relevant to them, so you won't get extremely strong dwarfs appearing just because they made an artifact.
