Steam...not the water kind.
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:21:08 am »

Anyone here use Steam? Or is there perhaps a Dwarf fortress group on it? If there isn't one I'd be willing to Build one.

Don't call people "stupid" or "ignorant" when giving them advice.

Anyway, yeah, I have Steam.  Probably 90% of people on here do.

So why not simply highjack this thread and turn it into one that belongs into DF General Discussion?
How do you get published on Steam? Is it feasible for DF to be distributed through it?

Don't see why not, it would need a better installer but there is free stuff on there. I don't see the point though :)

I have one DF-related Steam thing.

I tried to add DF as a non-Steam game to the game list to get it logged and have it shown to friends. Sadly it doesn't work, anyone now why, or even better, how to make it work?

Also, there's two big Dwarf Fortress groups on Steam, Dwarf Fortress Community [DFC], and Dwarf Fortress Players (DFP). The DFC is run and populated mainly by people from this forum and it's centered around the DFC TF2 server, the DFP seems to be the group with all Steam users that play significant amounts of DF. Naturally, the overlap with the two groups is huge.

I think the GameOverlayUI may interfere with the way DF handles visual output.

Gah, lame problem, the folder I had DF in was called Pelejä. I guess the Steam shortcut dislikes weird letters.

Works now, even the overlay, so thanks Naxza. Steam Community still refuses to reflect it though.

Valve takes a cut of the revenue for games published on Steam.  Publishing it on Steam would necessitate charging for the game.  The reality of DF's niche market and level of polish (i.e. lack of it) would probably also preclude any such arrangement anyway.

I dunno... there are certainly things that are free on steam, for example a number of Half-Life 2 mods that are published freely. Perhaps Dwarf Fortress could get some kind of arrangement like that going.

Weeell, time to go figure out how to add it as a Steam game.

Free mods are mods for a game that isn't free.  As for how, I suspect it's "Toady contacts Valve and asks".  I wouldn't hold my breath.

Your right, for some reason I was under the impression there was free games on Steam but it turns out there isn't. (or at least ordering by price doesn't find them). I suppose you could have a 'demo' which was free which was the full game though.

In any case there is not much point having this game on steam as it's not really ready for the mass populous. Better than most people try it when there is a good UI because I imagine most people won't try it more than once and so if that puts them off it's a shame. (both for the player losing out and the df community as a whole)
