Choose height for digging
« on: January 16, 2010, 11:24:38 pm »

When digging out a tunnel, it should be possible to choose how high the tunnel is. After all, you dont want every human swordsman and his dog entering your fortress do you? Standard tunnels would be at dwarf height and for a full grown elf/human to enter they would have to crouch, impairing their combat capabilities. However, this could be considered impolite, if everywhere they went was to cramped for them to move properly. So a recommended height for larger creatures be availiable.
Does this make sense?

This has a lot to do with size abstraction, so it would take a lot of work to make it feasible and useful.   A lot of a lot of work.   But who knows~

This will probably first really make sense when a Giant can't enter your tunnels either, unless they're actually two stories high. (But then they may be able to walk across your one level deep moat and crawl over your one level high perimeter wall? That's for another discussion.)

For the singular effect of tunnel heights its probably not worth it, but if it really fundamentally altered the map structure so sloped ground and other effects were included it might be worth it.

You know, if that didn't multiply the map data by a factor of 8...it might actually be reasonable.

All it should add is a byte to each Tile of the map not multiply every tile by 8.

It opens up a real can of worms...

It really doesn't make sense for humans and elves. Think about your house. Do your ceilings brush the top of your head and not allow in anyone taller than you?

YEAH! Low Ceilings! it isn't like Dwarves would NEED wide hallways for animals, statues, ores, or Air.

Hmmm...

That depends.  It still causes all kinds of weirdness when you add in fluids (3/7 height soil + 7/7 water = ?) not to mention path-finding (ramps are now adjacent tiles who's soil heights are near in value).  It's a non-trivial problem.

I think the idea has a lot of potential, but height/size for EVERYTHING needs to come into play. It'd be cool, but I figure it's going to be a long way off. Probably show up with multi-tile creatures and airflow management.
