I was going to berate you for not having properly searched first, but it actually hasn't come up almost at all.  Although this post is a direct reply to what you are proposing.

No one is physically stopping you from actually adding it to the Ark project (when it is back up)

so you may want to think about doing that.

It's also been directly addressed by Toady:

How would you add to your game something like say this fish?

The blob fish.  Which part were you talking about?  I have no idea about the swimming gel density working out, but the giant nose seems easy enough.  Deep fish in general are a little weird.  Just having them occur is off since it's so deep, but we can start to make believe around 50 tiles down, since that's half the ocean and we don't know what a tile is anyway.  I haven't done any biome separation there yet though.

If deep sea fish went in, crushing pressure would have to go in as well, making them inaccessible in any way. Seems kinda pointless

They could still get washed up on beaches or something.  Plus, a modded aquatic race could possibly cope with the pressure.

Also, a huge chunk of obsidian could plop into the ocean, allowing underground tunnels to access the new block at the bottom, which can be hollowed out for an underwater city. That underwater city would then be invaded by blobfish whenever a porthole burst.

PS: Water splashing out when a huge objects enters it would be nifty. But I digress.

Deep sea fish could exist exclusively as rare catches for particularly skilled and well equipped fishermen

Blobfishman?

Yes. Blobfish men with weapons made from the bones of the dead on the ocean floor.

Lol the blob fish looks funny. :D
Make a helmet out of it and make your enemy laugh to death.
Can't you just put it in the raws? just copy/paste another fish and change the name.

It's no fun without their true blobby nature. It would be best in the new version :D
