Some people think telling me and pretending that I look like/act like/am  a boy/their boyfriend serves well for a funny long-running joke (said person also thought hitting me repeatedly with a ladle over the course of hours would be hilarious).  They seem to like screwing with my gender and appearance in general.

"Vector, you're obviously a guy, because you don't look or act like girls are supposed to!"
"Vector, how are you so moe?  It never works when I do it!"
"Vector, you're like 40-year-old woman!"
"Vector, why can't you sit/talk/be more like a girl?"
"Daughter, you're too butch!"

Please note that this is while I am wearing dresses down to my ankles and retain entirely too much hair for anyone's good.  It's... confusing.

No, the really long and drawn out discussions are about nationality, often along the lines of "Soo... why are you stealing my culture, again?"

Really depends on age.
I remember having longer hair in eighth grade. The ensuing conversation happened at an Applebee's:

"Oh hi, may I take your order little girl?"
"...Im not a girl."
"oh..."

I then decided to cut my hair.

There is a reason I don't list my gender on the internet; I'd much rather just be a person, instead of having fiddly details attached that change people's behavior towards me. Also, the current generation is defying historical gender-roles more and more... and as such the old ideas tend to react to them, trying to fit less girly girls and less manly men into quasi-categories like "Butch" or "Metrosexual" or whatever.

I spent the last year living with an FTM Transgendered artist, and the experience of living with him was hugely eye-opening to me in regard to what gender and identity really are. The people who think its funny when guys are effeminate, or girls choose whether or not to buy into "girly" behaviors and traits, are subconsciously clinging to old ideas. People are still working to get their brains around gender and sex being completely different things... give it a decade or so, and in the meantime just enjoy being yourself. If you want to wear a dress AND combat boots, go for it.

I actually wrote an essay on the subject of Gender Identity and the American Media a bit ago... fascinating stuff to me! But yeah... I'mma get off the soapbox now.

In other news, good to see you Alexhans! Are you still as angry as you used to be when you're about to get lynched? :3

I'd say give it 25 years. We tend to take forever to advance ideas.

Also, I don't care. I just get confused when people keep going "she" instead of he, and I was never informed of the change. So, go back to being a girl. Or a guy. I don't care which, just make up your mind so we can stop start arguing.

Yes, I initially hid my gender because I was hoping for more standardized treatment online, rather than the storm of irritation that is real life.  Then I decided that enough was enough, and I might as well be what I am.  Hopefully y'all are familiar enough with me that it won't make any difference.

Part of the issue is that my parents are insanely entrenched in 1950s mentality, so that my life has been one long argument about gender roles.  The purpose of my life is apparently to go get a job (to "support my family," not for personal satisfaction), find a husband to be subordinate to, and have byootiful grandchildren.  It's been one big long argument about whether or not I speak correctly (hint: the correct answer is "no," as long as I'm not saying "Oh, thank you so very much, mother!  Can I serve you, father?"), am allowed to show anger, and so on.  Gotta find a manly man with big muscles, be soft-spoken and gentle, and above all, no assertiveness!

Hurngh.

This may be one of the reasons why I'm so ragey and irritable over the internet, as well as why I pretended to be male.  Being female is... difficult for me, but I'd also make a terrible man.  I don't really fit in either direction.

Well, if I've let the cat out of the bag, then I might as well run with it.  I'm female, so we might as well stick with she.
