It sounds bad because the USA is the most powerful economy in the world.

As a portion of the GDP, our debt is pretty average.

Most European countries are in a much worst situation the USA is. We can actually pay off our debts someday.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it normal for a country to be in debt?

That clock is a bit wrong on it's calculations. Namely the ones involving people, as it is around 50 million off.

Yes, Dwarf.  We, like all countries, borrow money from other countries.  Global economy is fun, huh?

You're not making your payments on time. I think we're going to repossess California, Hawaii and Alaska (ie all the cool states).

I've got a big pair of continent scissors you can use to chop the good bits off when the Chinese start repossessing America because she defaulted on her debts.

I remember it being around 1 trillion about a decade ago.. something about some article saying that Bill Gates could repay it.

Heh, I dunno, common sense seems to say that if you're making a lot of money you should not be in debt. I mean for a developing country, it's fine, but when you're already developed, what could you spend it on that'll pay off?

I'm sure they're making some high tech investments. And humanitarian ones too. I guess that's good enough.

The Chinese and Japanese mainly, I believe.  Although they're in debt too, to private companies, I guess.

Also, the info on debt vs GDP provided earlier seems a bit... well... wrong.  The CIA figures look pretty similar to the ones I've seen quoted most by reputable sources.

(Yeah, it's a bit out of date.  UK is up to around 60% now, for instance).
