JoystickHero's Capital Tileset (16x16)
« on: January 13, 2010, 09:51:30 pm »

Confirmed to work for 31.03

I've taken a few shots at making tilesets, but I always got discouraged because my lower-case letters (e, especially) looked retarded. Eventually, a significant other (one who I helped introduce to Dorfort, no less) gave me a suggestion. "Why not just have them be smaller capital letters? It'd look more Dorfy like that anyways." So I tried it. And it does.

Thus, Bay12 community, I present to you, without further ado, JoystickHero's 16x16 Dwarf Fortress tileset! Every single tile was pixeled in MSPaint, and based off of no particular font.

Update!

Multiple versions, now!

Old Version

If you're going to use it, remember to use MSPaint or a similar program to convert it into a 24-bit BMP, and to change your game's window size to account for these new, giganto letters. Personally, I use 80x50, with a 1280x800 window. (1280 IS the minimum width for a 16x16 tileset, so keep that in mind when you consider whether or not to use this!)

Pros
Clean and functional. No more confusing Cs for Gs!
Choose the tileset that suits you! Thin walls or thick? Straight or rounded? You decide!
Walls line up properly!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Large size means less eyestrain at what's going on!
Fill-level letters provide a visually pleasing indication of liquid level without hindering readability.
Dwarves have beards! No more disturbing perpetual smile.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tables and chairs are now easily distinguishable without losing their ASCII appeal.

Cons
Walls and river are asymmetrical, which may bother some. Fixed.
Large tiles means less information per screen
Minimum width may be too much for smaller screens.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There may be problems with partial refresh.

Oh man, I didn't see anyone trying to make 1-7 into a "level of water" graphics. It's an interesting find. Do you have any screenshots to show how it looks (because I am a bit lazy now to try it by myself, also it would attract more people)?

Huh? Wha? Someone responded?

Oh, I haven't been playing 40d much recently because I've been waiting for the new edition, but if you're willing to wait, I can try it out once Toady finishes picking out the bugs and lets us try our shiny new dorfort.

I just tried this. It's not  bad, it does indeed look more Dorfy.

Ill have to have a go with this at least, the water tiles are a good idea. I might have them for my custom set.

Dont worry im not going to steal them, I just mash up a load of tilesets to make my own custom one.

UPDATE: The tileset DOES work with 31.01, though you must convert the file to a 24-bit BMP. You need to do this with an image-editing program such as MSPaint, simply renaming the file will not work.

Graphical glitches make made it hard for me to get a clean screenshot, though I just had to turn off partial reload. So much for my framerate. :P

Uploading the screenshots now.

I like the tileset, it's really clean and simple. Certainly for those more fond of the ASCII. I really do like that water idea, but a picture of seeing how it looks in game would be a big help deciding whether to incorporate it. I think the gold plated tile set had something like that...

Anywho good job for a first. =-D

Also... a picture of the walls would be nice as well.

Pictures have been added to the spoiler tag under the main tileset. Screen-stretch warning, most of the pictures are still full-size!

I have no idea what you're talking about. It's always said 7:0:1. Really.

The much-awaited (ok, not really, but I've been wanting to do it for a while) update of JoystickHero's tileset to fix beta and &, as well as the asymmetrical walls is complete!

I tried kriegthickr.png, and it didn't work well for me.
It's like the transparency didn't work.

Most of the non-grass tiles had a magenta cast behind them. All the blood-soaked tiles were solid dark red, rather than a red cast over whatever they were.

Phoebus tile set has water levels. They rock.

I have never heard of that happening before. Try using an image editor to convert it to a 24-color BMP. If it still doesn't work, I have absolutely no idea.
