Let's Play Aurora: Terran Crusade

Aurora Let's Play!
As seen here: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=47678.0
It is just about the most complicated 4x game I've ever seen.

Charlie Kennedy and Jacob Hunter bowed to the darkness.

"The time has come".

The old world had ended. The Earth was a smoldering ruin. Terra would have her revenge, and the three of them were her weapons.

"The Holy Terran Empire shall construct her ships of war. Hunter, you shall take  control of the governorship of Earth." Jacob Hunter bowed quickly and exited the room to consolidate his power.

"Kennedy, you shall assume Command of the Crusader Fleet. Survey all you can. Prepare to kill all aliens." Kennedy smirked to himself, thinking he would need a name with a better commanding presence. He flourished his bow and left the room.

The darkness sat deep in thought.

--------------------------------------------------------------
So this Let's Play of Aurora - it's going to be epic scale mayhem. I'm still learning the game and as such will be writing tutorial remarks as I go along. First, I'm going to attempt elimination of all hostile alien races, and then things are going to get brutal.

2000 systems
12 starting NPRs, 13 races total so far and precursors
Race name: Holy Terran Empire
Race: Humans
Planet: Earth
Government: Enlightened Despotism
Ship classes: Gods and Goddesses Give me some ideas for these, but don't use obvious ones like Thor and Shiva early - planet-ending ships will come later
People names/ship names: Claim them as they appear Hunter and Kennedy are up for grabs now. As well as the survey ships I'm about to make.

Awesome. Maybe while reading this I'll get some good tips so I can have the slightest idea of what I'm doing in Aurora :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Current stats for Earth under F2 window

Hunter: I was not the best, but I was the best candidate for the job. Issac Hart did not take too kindly at being passed up for governorship despite his being a level (6) above mine (5). However, my areas of expertise are of the like that has not been seen before and is greatly needed by the Holy Empire.
F4 screen

My first order as Governor of Earth is to launch mining colonies to Mercury and Venus, as well as begin investing heavily in long range sensors and engine technology.

OffTopic: Have any questions along the way just ask and I'll answer as well as I know.

Perhaps Demigods or Heroes would be good for the early low level ships? Hercules, Achilles, etc?

I think 12 starting NPRs is a little extreme; the tutorial suggests 1, and don't forget that NPRs will pop up as you play.

Kennedy, High Rear Admiral of the Holy Terran Fleet: I am told to deliver some automated mines on Mercury and Venus because of the abundant resources there.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My civilian counterpart has already drawn up the design for a colony, forgetting that it's too fucking hot for human life in those places as well as the fact that we have no freighter ships to do his bidding. If I had some space-faring worthy ships, I'll see what I can do. Please Almighty, make it something with guns.
Signing off,
High Rear Admiral of the Holy Terran Fleet

Hunter, Governor of Earth: I have checked with the Scientists, we can begin designing prototypes for freighters as well as found out we have salvaged the tech for level 4 gauss rifles. I was hoping for more advanced survey equipment but we'll have to take what we can get. Designs are on the way for engines so ship construction can begin.

Kennedy, High Rear Admiral of the Holy Terran Fleet: Level 4 gauss rifles? Gentlemen, there is a God and he listens. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to talk to our Scientists about some missiles.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kennedy, High Rear Admiral of the Holy Terran Fleet: As Holy Terra would have it, one of our leading scientists is a 25% bonus expert on missiles and other kinetic weapons. While for now they are focused on propulsion and surveying, soon we shall have advanced missiles.

@Mephansteras: Sure, whatever you guys want. Need suggested names for my survey ships.

@Magnuus: Extreme is how my computer rolls :)

Currently in-research Geo-survey ships will be "Argonaut" class, any suggestions for Grav survey ships, freighters, and colony ships? Those are my next few creations.

Freighters should be Atlas.

Colony ships, maybe Prometheus?  Bringing light to the dark places of the galaxy?

Anyway, how did you assign a planetary gov'nuh?  I have a guy with the proper administrator level but I can't figure out how to appoint him.

F4 Officers screen.
Mid-left side you'll see a pulldown menu for "Leader Type". Choose Civilian Administrators.

In the left column are the Administrators to choose from. Middle column are potential assignments. Chose whichever colony needs one.

Then lower right corner click "Assign" button.

I like the ideas for ship names so far.

Hermes was the god of flight, mischief, commerce and travelers. so he's more suited to a freighter or colony ship.

Today I bring great tidings!

The first of Holy Terra's Spaceships are being constructed.

Together as one they shall explore the warped space where no man has gone before. Our colony ships and freighters shall soon follow and we shall reclaim the darkness!
