Vacuum Breakers, or some other water valve that permits passage of water in only 1 direction.
I suppose you could even link it to a mechanism and switch it off completely.

As much as I'd want these, I have a feeling that one way valves are a little too modern.

Not necessarily. a one way valve is simply a hinged door in a section of pipe. when water passes in one direction, the door is pushed open. When it tries to flow the other way, the pressure pushes it shut.

A ball in a tube can also work.

The pumps used on those two ships made by caligula which were by the italian city of Nemi, had lead flap valves in them to prevent backflow. (the germans destroyed the excavated ships when retreating in wwII).

Just because you can't find evidence of dragons, doesn't mean they never existed. If people believe all that dinosaur crap, what couldn't dragons be real?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pump

Lots of ways to make one way valves.  They had pumps a loong time ago, and by their very nature pumps have to have a one way valve or something of that sort.

This thread is going in a bad direction.

In any case, the original idea is fine; although I don't really understand how a vacuum breaker works, I doubt that the dwarven version has to be as effective or high tech.

essentially.. a one way valve.. so say.. if its set to pressures of 2/7 any time the water on one side raises above 2/7 the water flows through it to the other side.. but never back..  (even if its just a ripple)
