You aren't sharing your meat enough.  You should be giving your meat to everybody on the trail.  You need to be relentless, always on the hunt, always giving them the meat.  That's how you score.

So, did Valar actually come back crazy after getting lost or is he just dead for all intents and purposes?

He isn't actually crazy in game, He just went missing in the desert for 5 days with no water. I expanded on that to create some story from it. He is definitely still with the caravan.
Any ways I'll get back to playing this later tonight.

I'm interested, where did you get this game from? As a result of XKCD I understand its a game a lot of american school children played but I'm interested as to where you bought/downloaded the version you're playing from.

This game (Oregon Trail Deluxe) is classified as abandonware, which means someone still holds copyrights for it but is no longer supported or sold by the developers/publishers. Not sure where forum policy stands on linking to abandonware and I don't really want to get banned for it so you will have to find it for yourself. Also I couldn't get it to run with windows so am using DosBox to play it.

Day43, A day out from Fort Laramie and we collide with a rock in the road. Goron was controlling the oxen, was too busy day dreaming away and didn't even see the rock. We had to replace the wheel with a spare.
Excellent that we had that spare, huh guys? Now we got to practice wagon mending and keep our skills sharp; don't want to get complacent do we? This is the life!

Going to the fort is unneccesary.  There is nothing you can't solve on this trail by doing things involving other people, your meat and passionately giving.  Rest a couple of days and take the chance to get your meat up a little higher while you are waiting around.
