I can't work this game out. I got lost during the docking part of the tutorial and crashed into a space station :C

You know neruz...

't' while looking at the station (or clicking on the icon) -> 'u'.

Done.

What station? I couldn't even find the station it told me to dock at, none of the station names matched the name i was given.

You didn't specify if you were playing  X3:R or X3:TC, but since the thread is about X3:TC (and I don't recall of anything worth calling a tutorial  in X3:R) I'll assume the latter.

If this tutorial is actually an in-game "mission", then the target station or, in the case said station is in another sector, the gate leading the right way should be highlighted by the HUD (in orange). If you are using the sector map, the mission-related station should appears above the others.

Hopes this help, because X3 is really an awesome game once you get past the initial learning curve; half of which is due to the - still - cumbersome interface (you would think they would get it right after a few games... guess not)

Yeah, i think i'm starting to work out the basics.

Or i was, until i took an 'easy' defend the earth mission and got shot out of the sky by some dude while defending Pluto.

'Al-ert, Missile Closing'

That's nice, whatthefuckamisupposedtodoaboutit.

Ok, lets try this again. Now i know how not to fly into things, does anyone have any suggestions for shit i should do to start off? Since i am apparantly in a big empty ball of space with a few space stations around and no-one to talk to and i'm rapidly going to get lost or going to try flying into that planet to see what happens.

I just got X3:TC myself, so haven't played much yet. The only time I've seen combat so far was in my kestrel against a lone Xenon L. Which promptly shot me out of the sky with a missile. I'm used to playing X3:R with the XTM mod, where nothing short of an M3 (M3+ ideally) can survive long in combat, so I'll assume X3:TC is similar in this regard.

I don't know what ship you're using, but chance are it isn't something you want to take alone in combat.

Eh, nah i just need to be a bit smarter than ALL WEAPONS FIER!

I also need to work out how to repair my poor damaeged hull.

I can take on Xenon M's pretty easily, but i run out of shooty energy after 3, and if one of the buggers gets behind me i'm in trouble. If i get behind him though :D

To repair your hull:

Shift - E to eject then aim at your ship in your space suit and FIRE AT WILL! Your spacesuit has a repair laser.

Also when your new to TC, the Terran Defender start is excellent, the M4 you get is quite good and can take M3s and even m6s..

So i bought myself a new engine to go to somewhere around 350 m/s, thought it would be oarsum.

Almost immediately crashed into the dude i was supposed to be escorting.

See, this is the kind of shit that they need to tell you. I just spent an hour flying to the nearest shipyard.

Ok, how do you make any reasonable amount of money in this game? I'm seeing missions for like, 900 credits, the fuck is that shit? I have guns on this thing worth 30,000 credits and you're offering me 900 credits to take your daughter to school in the morning? What is wrong with you!

Those missions aren't really worth it except if you're going that way anyway, trading and whatnot. If you see someone wanting to do an inspection tour or something like that, take it, even though the number of credits isn't that high. Once you get to his destination, he'll offer another mission, then another.

Seek and destroy missions: buy missiles.

So i just accidentally jacked a reasonably good ship; i was spost to go grab it and take it back to the dude who sent me, but he only gave me an hour to do it and as it turned out i needed about two hours, the mission expired and now i have his ship.

Is something bad going to happen to me?

--EDIT--

Apparantly a bunch of cops will show up and blow me out of the sky. Fun.

In X2 missiles were ridiculous.
X3:R missiles were nice, X3:TC is pwnage.

You can take down some M5 and even M3 with some tactics.

I miss X3:TC so much. lawl

I Jacked a M7 shrike and the Argon dropped a destroyer on me, ended up reloading to try again, this time I managed to jump it out and sell it at a ship yard without getting anything dropped on me. Yet at least.... *Looks around paranoid like*

Cops only show up when the ship still exist and in your possession. Selling it, you only lose rep (the same you do if it gets destroyed by cops...) It's usually worth selling unless you really need the reputation or the reward is far greater than the ship price (only happens at higher ranks).

The logic behind these mission is elusive to say the least  ::)

So I've got a Mercury trader running around trading for me and about 400k in my wallet but I'm a little lost as to my next move. So far I've figured I've got these options

-Hire a TL and set up a Cattle Ranch close to Argon Prime to take advantage of the low Energy prices nearby.

-Buy another Mercury and expand my trading fleet.

-Save up for my own TL and do some trading on a massive scale

Anyone have any advice?

Also, telling my Mercury to Auto Best Buy and Auto Best Sell each time it buys or sells something is a bit annoying. I've already tried a manual trade route but it always becomes very unprofitable after the first trade run. Any way to get around this?

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

What I did in my game was get like 6-7 UT's going while i buggered around making money myself (Combat missions mostly) Then got a TL and did station construction missions. (Which you can make up to 4 mil a mission sometimes)  GoD tends to randomize everybody's game to hell eventually but in my game I got like 20 station construction missions in the Empires Edge-Dukes Domain-Empires Ridge area, with a few in trinity sanctum for good measure.

Also picking a(Non Missile) M7 is hard.

Wanted panther at first because its a light carrier and I like carriers... but its paintjob is crap.

Reloaded and tried out the Deimos... Its model is ugly as hell on the front and its kinda a pain to give it weapons, was gonna just deal with it but eh decided not to.

Reloaded, now gonna try out the Thresher I guess, best looking one I've seen so far. and can mount PPC's which is nice.

So how do I train up a Mercury pilot to use Universal trader? Just leave him on Sector Trading for a while?
