On the commanders screen, you should simply be able to click on the administrator you want, click on Governor of Earth, then click on Assign in the lower right corner. If the admin has a high enough admin ranking, he should then be appointed to that position.

Oh. Oh wow. Just landed a geosurvey vessel and it's single jump escort in the Procyon system, 1 jum out from Sol. Everything is going wonderful, survey two of the three planets, and hey, they have some nice mineral wealth. Then I notice the third planet has only a 2x colony cost, so I send my little explorers on over.

Skip forward 30 days to get there, I get new contacts listed. 30 seconds later everything is dead, my escort didnt get a single shot off before being pummeled to death by multiple energy weapons. According to the combat log, I'm facing something like 8 ships that outrange me, go 7000 km/s (5500 faster than my combat ship) and oh, just for hilarities sake, trying to ommunicate with them gives me the message; Race seems unwilling to interact. -2 to all future dealings.

I'm coming back with some 50000t dreadnoughts as soon as I can. I may have to research some freakishly huge jump engines and retool my shipyards, but those bastards are going down.

Don't spend anything on the jump engines. If you build a jumpgate on one end of a jump point, it's one way. Meaning you can go in, but the angry aliens can't come out through it. You'll want a jumpgate to that system anyway, and it saves you research points and minerals. Plus, you can load more weapons on your dreadnaughts ;)

Once you're done mopping up the aliens, just jump your jumpgate constructor to the other side (they arn't consumed when building a jumpgate) and make it a two-way jump gate.

That seems to get everyone. It is one of those unintuitive little things that are perferctly clear once you know them. ;)

my first contact scenario tended to be (up till I ran out of scouts):
hey a nice planet! oh there are thermals on my scanner, lets take a closer look... ah, interesting, lets go home. Aargh! They are coming right 4 us!
12 seconds later: item X is destroyed x20. ship destroyed due to loss of structural integrity.
My sciencevessels are just chewtoys for them. :(

That makes me think, can you shoot missiles through jumpgates?  That would be awesome.

I'm also wondering if you can target the gates in case you find hostile aliens, or if you can put jump drives on your missiles.

No; I think jumpgates are neutral structures with no real presence other than allowing jumps, so no; and missiles are just a series of numbers in different categories, no parts, unless you want to count second stage missiles as parts, so no on that too.

Yea, as far  as I am aware there's no way to create jump missiles.  They would probably be an interface nightmare at any rate.  Fire control currently can't fire on anything outside of the system it's in, even if somebody else sees the contacts. and even if the missiles could strike at a target, there's the sensor delay after a jump that would probably get them all destroyed while they try to acquire targets.

According to the Aurora forums most new players make their ships too heavy, too lightly armored, and too slow.  I think I'm ok on the armor area, but only my light fighters can get anywhere near 5000 km/sec, which the enemy ships seem to be easily capable of the majority of the time. And if I am going to focus on laser weaponry like I usually do in 4x games like GalCiv and SOTS, I'm going to need to be fast enough to keep them in range.  So I am redesigning my ships, with a minimum speed of 5000km/sec in mind.  Current ships will just sit around defending jump points.

Not all people on the forum make highly-efficient designs. One of them even has a reputation of building it "big". I even spotted a few designs way over 500.000 tons. Those take a decade to build and take more minerals than an entire system can provide. But once it does an alpha strike, everything goes boom. Entire fleets, that is.

In the end, Aurora is very flexible regarding design. It is perfectly possible to have a trio of huuuuuuuuge ships who can fight their way through a small fleet without breaking a sweat. But eventually, you'll get a feel for the ships. It's all about quantity and quality. :)

But that's just my opinion ... formed after browsing a few posts made by Steve.

Fun Fact:

Marines complain even before they finish loading into Dropships.  That is if you don't add loading things, taking 10 days.

About 4-7 days in, they start complaining.

Fun Fact 2: Dropship speed of 18000 vs 10000 speed is not big enough of a difference for a safe boarding party.

After manual instalation, screen resizing aaand some dll copying by hand, I managed to play Aurora.

The multitude of options struck me down when I started, but few hours and I managed to do some stuff.

I dunno, but this game lacks 'this thing' that might drag me in. It's nothing as fun and nice like DF :P

Duh, maybe I just need to play a little more...
