Okay, that did finally say that he was promoted, although Earth is still labeled Unassigned.  I'm chalking this up to more awful design ethic.  This thing couldn't be less user friendly, it doesn't even really indicate when something is selected or not.

Click on the person you want to assign, He is now highlighted in blue. Click on what you want to assign him to. That is now highlighted in blue. Click Assign.

Not sure how it could be much easier than that TBH

You also have to advance time at least 5 seconds after a promotion or assignment for it to take effect.  That kinda threw me off for awhile too.  There is supposed to be a button that does the assignments immediately, but that hasn't worked for me yet.

Promote knight to knight captain. Wait 5 seconds, promote knight captain to knight commander, wait 5 seconds, promote knight commander to marquis, wait 5 seconds, finally assign marquis to marquis only rank battlecriuser, wait 5 seconds.
You don't have to advance time. As soon as you click assign or promote, the window is updated. Check you have the latest version by looking at the game window. It should say v4.77 in the top right.

This thing runs on microsoft acess... no wonder why so many errors.
It seems to run just fine if you follow the installation instructions

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't industry need minerals on the planet it's on in order to build anything? Meaning you either mine them there, send them by mass drivers, or ship them in on freighters.

Also, how can you see what jump points have gates on them?
Yes you need minerals. Jump gates show up as a square around the jump point.

Steve
annual amount required can be found in the mining tab, by the way.

and:
AHA! I thought the red square indicated an event as I had just checked a show events option in one of the display boxes.

and:
Version 4.8 cool! Save compatability is not a huge problem here, we've just started exploring Aurora. Also, We have been living with the next version of DF breaking compat for quite a while now. Which also will be coming out soon-ish by the way. Whoo! :D

Here we go, my first fleet is ready and undergoing pre-tour preparations.  This is exciting!

I'm using the premade ships and stuff, as I said before.  I've got two Hellion class missile destroyers, a Vindicator Class Destroyer, and a Rook Class destroyer escort.  It's a small fleet, but we'll see what happens.

Is there 20+MB of duplicate race files still being distributed in 4.80?

Buh.

Apparently Jump Gates on All Jump Points still means I need a jump ship to send my fleet to the next system.  My fleet was sitting right outside the gate when they were told they won't be able to go until mid-2028.

Darnit.

Okay, does anybody have a link for a REAL TUTORIAL, that actually explains how the game is supposed to work, AND is typed at least well enough to be legible?  Because I'm using the hideous GameFAQs abortion from the wiki page and I'm stuck on assigning a governor to Earth, because I can't figure out what button to press to actually assign him there.

What the fuck is wrong with this interface, and why isn't there a click-by-click tutorial included?  Or for that matter a real website instead of a poorly typed wikia and a forum I'm not going to navigate?

This is a game I created for myself and made it available to others to use for free, so forgive me if I don't provide extensive manuals and glossy web sites for free as well. Other people have given their free time to create the wiki. Unfortunately, this is the type of abuse I have come to expect from this thread so I'll excuse myself at this point. If anyone needs any assistance with any issues they will have to post in the Aurora forums. However, as Aurora is for adults only, any posts with the above attitude will be deleted

And if you had bothered to look before complaining you would have found the tutorial at http://aurora.pentarch.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1860

Darn, we scared him off with our need for quality.  I guess Toady has spoiled us.

He'll still be here, reading criticism on the quiet. He needs us too much to just walk.

I doubt we are needed that much.

He is not like Toady dependent financially on our goodwill.

I am surprised he takes such uncivilized critique so seriously, I'd just ignore the whiners and send them a scalding PM if they realy pissed me off.

In any case, I'll be "Commodore_Areyar" over there. :)

The game reminds me of Stars! when I can get it on systems with a large enough screen...  Now it's hard, but very very interesting and fun.  But honestly due to the resolution problems I can't see recommending the game to anyone.  If that was "fixed" in the game then I'd probably pass it around constantly.  But if the reason that it's like that is the creator wants to use his screen setup and doesn't really seem to give a flip about compatibility with smaller monitors.. well that seems sad to me.

If you add Cargo Handlng units to a ship you can shorten the time it takes to load.
I'm essentially using the freighter from the tutorial, which has two cargo handlers. I kinda ssume when it said "1:01:00" it meant, 'one day and one minute to fully load'

Have you actually produced infrastructure?
The economy screen shows you there is Infrastructure produced in surplus every year, but this is civilian owned. Maybe you can buy it, like you can civ owned minerals, but I'm not sure.
I've created 1000 infrastructure which I assume is just sitting on Earth somewhere. It shows 1000 infrastructure in the summary tab.

Check the events window, might say something there if there is a problem. Without cargo handling units it takes something like 10 days to load a ship.
I think I found the problem? The event window says "Freighter cannot load movement orders as there are shipyard tasks associated with the fleet." The three freighters are in their own task force/fleet named "Freighters"

I have two commercial shipyards and 4 naval shipyards. One naval shipyard is producing the cruiser I mentioned, and one commercial shipyard is making colony ships. No shipyards have any tasks such as making more slipways or anything like that. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Also, if the creator of the game is looking here, I suggest he starts using png's and stuff for the flags, racial pictures, etc. The jpegs are quite ugly and the bitmaps are... well... bitmaps =P though I imagine that's not a very high priority

To be honest most of the critique here is quite mild and mainly about the install process. Obviously there is one or two posts ranting but that is par for the course.

Considering the game uses a database that was obsoleted by it's creators almost 10 years back (jet) which causes significant amounts of instability and won't help the speed either, and has a fairly insane amount of complexity just to get it running I think he should be happy with the responses so far. Most of which are highly positive.

It's all very well him saying he created it just for him but it is publicly available and so doesn't give him the right to be insulting when others play it and comment. Frankly his attitude makes me wonder why we should care what he thinks, our feed back he is of course welcome to ignore if he so wishes anyway.

You do?  I don't.  The game is fun when it works but he's no Toady.
