Today I might finally start actually enjoying the game (after spending most of yesterday afternoon reading parts of tutorials and trying to fix the resolution issue). I'm sure I wont be disappointed :)

And a community Aurora game sounds like an awesome idea, do want!

EDIT: Also, I'm a bit undecided on whether I should give alien races a penalty (or more) for my first game, since I like to play it easy and take my time to do stuff, especially while I discover the game, yet I dont want to completely remove alien races. Are alien races normally very aggressive or is there a good chance they'll just peacefully leave me alone most of the time?

Since I love the X series games (you can notice it in my posts on the X³:TC thread), I will take inspiration on ship classifications and weapons.
If you guys don't remember/want to take a look:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X3_Reunion

Get to the Ship Classifications part.
M5 is Scout, M3 is fighter, etc.
Also there is images in the end of the page, regarding weapon and ship stats.

As I read the tutorials I'm also thinking about ship designs with my 7th brain core.
Can civilians build military ships for their own escorts? (I believe they can't, duh)
Can commercial ships have weapons for their own defense? (I think it's okay to freighters have point defense turrets, or be lightly armed)
Hell I haven't even started playing and already started brainstorming

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

I can't wait to finish the tutorial, I haven't been this excited over a game in a long time.

Just finished reading the Beam Warship tutorial and I must say that you, Steve, must be crazy.

That stuff is awesome and the possibilities are huge.
The way the game is balanced is also very nice, since there could be so many different ship/components design and focuses.
I love making fast and long-range ships so I believe I'll stick to that in my first game..

I'd like to be involved in a community game of this on the basis I'm not sure I have time to play it myself right now and it sounds like it's a good game. Or at the very least interesting.

No, you own the military so you need to provide escort where you think it is necessary. It is an interesting idea though. While it would seem odd if the Maersk Line starting building Arleigh Burkes, the Aurora universe is a little more dangerous than the Somali coast so some type of small patrol warship commissioned by the shipping lines might be an interesting addition to the game. I'll give it some thought.

Commercial ships can mount close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for point defence. They can also have sensors of 1 HS or less.

Nice, thanks for the answer :]

Someone said about advancing time by a year..is this possible?
I'm searching on how to do it, but I'm only able to advance time in 30 days.
Doing a conventional start heehee

Very fun game now that I got used to the interface. Its not badly done, it's just that there is so much of it  ;D

Mostly just messing around with exploration and terraforming at the moment. Terraforming in particular have the best mechanic I have seen in a game yet by far.

Did someone manage to create some fighters yet? I only seem to be able to create regular ships or PDC...

So. SDesk failed me and I had to dig out an old CRT monitor to hook my laptop up to. I'm not pleased, but at least I got the game running.

My general advice is: after your first tryout, start from scratch.

n.b.
It is better to start your second real game with very little pregame research points, it helps for getting an idea of how the technology/blueprint system is put together.
In your first it is best to select the default Terran Campaign settings, as you will have some of the basic shiptypes prebuilt and the requisite components preresearched. (So you can learn to handle/ design ships.)
Too much preresearch/design can cause you to be thrown into a universe with excessive loads of designs and technology you don't know anything about yet. Which can be very confusing.

Started my new game with 10k RP, almost none of the basic components are designed yet... no engines for one. :P

Oh Steve? (I'll register on your dedicated forum at some point, don't worry)
I had an error59 hangup in shipdesign when there were none yet and I did not select new, but tried to pull down on the ship/PDP tab or maybe the hulltype tab.
Is this a known bug or just that faulty installation on my part thing you mentioned earlier?

My most recent game was killed by a civilian freighter being unable to load colonists (The game thinks it's my business, so automatic turns don't work and naturally there's no way for me to affect civilian transfers. even with SpaceMaster, argh!)

also, I was wondering, maybe instead of real scrolling, steve could make it so that all windows be draggable by their sides or something (I don't know how hard that is in VB, but back when I was learning Delphi, that* was considered a standard learning exercise.)
_____________
*)well... it was a bit easier, as you had most of the form (window) free of information and available for you to tamper with.

That would work, although according to SDesk the windows are actually cut off by lack of resolution, so even if you pull it up to see the bottom the bottom will still be missing.

hm, well that certainly explains some things. (like why resizeEnbale does such a poor job if you try to trim the screens just a bit)

That's a known bug that is fixed in v4.8. It only appears if you have no classes and select that dropdown.
