Anyone have a save where you start in a situation similar to XCOM?
If I wasn't so inebriated right now I could set something like that up.  It would be more like Solar War than pure Xcom.  The whole game focusing on running a grand multiple star faring empire part of Aurora make the idea hard, but not impossible.

Now facing that challenge in Aurora, now that is near impossible, but still probable.  Could be possible as a multiplayer game.  Humans and invaders taking turns setting orders with a GM (or have the invaders' player try and run a 'fair' game) to run time.

Yep, pretty much any practical implementation would by necessity be PvP run with a GM; by the time you get to ground combat, it's usually long over. Probably a better way would be something like a Martian invasion or Outer Humanity (on Jovian moons + Titan + asteroids) vs. Core Humanity (Earth + other terrestrial planets).

My intelligence isn't updating when I pick up a new sensor on NPR ships. I get a notification in the event window, but the "weapon and sensor data" area remains blank.

I 'm thinking about starting to play this again. Has anyone experience with this on Windows 8.1 or 8?

Yep. It runs like normal for me. Windows 8 and 8.1
Sadly I haven't played it as much as I would like lately.

okay when I run setup.exe for the v5.54 installation, right at the end of the installation I get:

An error occurred while registering the file 'C:\Windows\System 32\comctl32.oxc'

Does anynone know if this is a problem?

Edit: After continuing the installation as if nothing happened I can run the game, but it crashes as soon as I open the system map.

Funny thing:
Lost two scientists to researching Fuel Usage 0.7.
First scientist died in an accident.
Second scientist forced to retire due to medical condition.

What kind of fuel tech is this?! :P
This remind me of the explosives tech upgrade blurbs in Revenge Of The Titans, heh.

I had the exact same thing.  This is one of the weirdest solutions I have ever found - If it's the same file I'm thinking of, then you need to get that file.  Unfortunately it's like impossible to find.  The ONLY place I could find it was an "auto shutdown timer" that some guy made that would begin to shut down your computer at a certain time of day.  This obscure program has the file you need and installs it.  So instal the timer, then uninstall the timer, and the file is in.

Seriously, Aurora is the weirdest 'hack to play' game I've ever seen.

I searched for COMCTL32.ocx on my computer, I have it and it is in the right folder. My computer knowledge is insufficient to detect the problem.

Seriously, Aurora is the weirdest 'hack to play' game I've ever seen.

Ways of destroying your computer in order of effectiveness :

5: Install porn.exe.
4: Install Norton anti-virus.
3: Let your grandma surfing internet without supervision.
2: Piss on it while the power is on.
1: Dare to try to play Aurora.
