Once you realize the UI isn't quite as complicated as it appears at first, the rest should flow easily from there.

My advice is as follows: Press f3 after you've started a game. This brings up the main screen from which you can do pretty much everything.

Press all the buttons and see what they do/to what submenu they take you. You can close any window you like, if you accidentally close the main one, just press f3 again.

Pretty much like Dwarf Fortress, you will end up using only one or two of the submenus most of the time.

It's actually surprisingly compartmentalized; the only times where you really need to have multiple windows open at the same time are when designing ships, missiles, and turrets, and when actively prosecuting combat. Granted, those are the two most important and interesting parts of the game, heh.

I love the game but I really really really hope he does work on/finish Aurora 2 where time will just flow so hopefully no longer waiting hours in real life for a week to pass in Aurora.

I think if you let the game go on long enough it will be that real life is quicker and it will take more then a day to process a day in Aurora.

Eeh. It shouldn't be that slow unless you've got an absolute mountain of NPR activity from poorly optimized starting conditions, or if your computer has really low-end specs. Back when I had my old Dell craptop I consistently had better performance than that despite it being basically useless for anything beyond internet browsing and really old games.

Say, how do you use your Starting RP?  I can't seem to do anything with it.

As long as you have some there should be an instant button under the research topics, unless you selected to auto spend them in which case you should see some tech starting at level > 1

You have to turn on SM mode and use the instant research options, you can also have the game auto-spend your starting RP but only in the game set-up

Here is the thread.  Not much so far, but there's still months to go.

Low Level Fleet Training
All combat vessels will slowly gain fleet training points even if they are not involved in training exercises. A combat vessel is defined as one with PPV > 0. During fleet training exercises the annual rate of points gained is the Crew Training Skill of the Task Force Commander plus the operations bonus of the Operations Staff Officer. So if the task force commander has crew training of 200 and the operations officer has an ops bonus of 30%, annual crew training points would be 260. This is further increased by the grade bonus of the ship being trained. A ship has to gain 500 training points to have 100% fleet training skill.

For low level training, which is assumed to be gained through general experience and perhaps simulators, the annual training rate is 30. This is also modified by crew grade. The low level training is to counter the issue of long-serving ships responding just as slowly as newly constructed ships if neither has had any fleet training. In reality, the long-serving crew should have some advantage in that situation even without formal training. Of course, fleet training still be far more effective in terms of creating crews that quickly respond to orders in combat situations.

Chance of NPR Generating a New NPR
Currently you can set the chance of an NPR appearing on a potentially habitable planet during system generation.

In v6.50 when creating a new game, or editing an existing one, there is an additional parameter for the NPR generation chance when a system is generated by an NPR rather than a player race.

A second new on/off parameter sets whether spoiler races can be generated in new systems discovered by an NPR.

The two above parameters allow players to create a game where the chances of NPRs becoming involved in combat against non-player forces are significantly reduced, which in turn reduces the overall number of slowdowns where the player is uninvolved.

Army Officer Promotions
Army officers will be promoted at the ratio of 4-1 instead of the current 5-1

The second one really appeals to me.  Now I can create multiple NPRs at game generation without worrying about the game bogging down.

so now NPR's can start wars and not grow uninhibited? praise Armok.

also, has anyone thought about the size of ships? the average aircraft carrier now has 90k tons of displacement, while my largest cruiser weighs in at only 25k. how do you guys view the sizes of your ships? hull sizes or..??

I think it's the other way around; today NPRs can explore, which may generate another NPR, which they then go to war with, leading to a bunch of slowdowns for the player as a bunch of ships half a galaxy away do sensor reads on each other. In the next build, there will be settings that will allow the player to prevent the NPRs from generating new NPRs, reducing the chance of unrelated-to-the-player interrupts.

An IRL cruiser is between 9,000 and 12,000 tons, so your cruisers are rather large actually. Maybe you should rename them to something else like battlecruiser.

yeah, but I guess I just found it weird that an IRL carrier outweighs pretty much all my ships. even my in game carriers.
