Anyone have any further news about Pulsar (the remake in C#)?
I absolutely love this game, but cannot stand playing a game that I know will eventually die on me by becoming completely unplayable through lag/be wildly unstable.

DF is MUCH better in that respect though. Although crazy things/glitches and instability can and do happen, Aurora just breaks down after you reach a certain point and each turn takes 5-10 minutes to resolve.

It is a fan-remake, although I do believe they're staying as close as is absolutely possible to the main game. I'm monitoring the forums a lot, but they don't tend to get much activity so I thought bay12s might know more.

I'd really like to get into this game, but I have flipping clue how to. All the terms and statistics seem alien. I have no idea what the specifications for a working ship should be, and I have no real example to give me an idea of how well/poorly I am doing. Anyone willing to provide a bit of help?

It's pretty tricky to get into, but most of the time you just need to balance stuff out. Make sure you have enough minerals to build things and enough financial centres so you don't run out of money. After that, you just need to build some ships with geo-scanning capabilities (you'll also need to make sure it has an engine - this confused me for a while), and then send them out with a team to scan other bodies for minerals. After that you can mine them and ferry (or mass drive) your stuff around.

There's way too many things to explain here, but I think the forum and wiki have some pretty good tutorials.

It's a fantastic game, just be warned that it slows down to several minutes (at least) per turn right when it starts to get fun, which is pretty much the most annoying gaming experience I've ever had.

Try the tutorials on the wiki/forum although some parts are a bit outdated, they do help, it does take a few tries to get into the game, but if you do get into it you can get hooked pretty quickly.

You can fire off anti-ship missiles which will then be fired on by anti-missile missiles, however you can choose to fire anti-anti-missile missiles at those anti-missile missiles although they have to be pretty fast to intercept them before they hit your anti-ship missiles, those anti-anti-missile missiles might even be fired on by anti-anti-anti-missile missiles but those missiles might self destruct if their targets are already destroyed.

I am already looking forward to Aurora 2, having smoother time transition will be much more fun.

Anyway, Forget about financial centers, the best source of income is to get more colonies started right away.
As for the interface, well, you'll get used to it, Aurora is best learnt in discrete batches, My theory of best order to learn?
Start by Learning what the resources are, what different buildings do and how to modify production.
Then learn how research works, I suggest putting everything into new engine technology or better production technology.
Then you should learn how to build simple ships. this is really the meat of Aurora, the ship design is where you'll be spending all your effort (not your time, oh no you'll be spending all that waiting for turns to process, especially in combat), but the ship design and combat simulation is what draws most people to this, that and the opportunity for decent fiction/roleplay.

When I say simple ships, you just need to learn how to design an appropiate engine, how much fuel to carry, and some payload. Start with a freighter and go to military ships later.
Then you start exploring the interface, reading up on what weapons are available, what terraforming does etc, finally make some combat ships, post them to the forum, get important pointers, redesign the ship half a dozen times, then end up with something passable, and learn in the process.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I know it doesn't change the fact that individual turns take a long time, but there is a way to do consecutive turns slightly faster for each turn. In the F3 map there is a checkbox that says repeat or something along those lines to the right near the buttons for different turn sizes. There is also a small field to enter a number in. If you do say twelve 30 day turns on repeat it will pass a year of time faster than if you click 30 days twelve times.

In addition repeat turns will not be changed to a lesser time increment like sometimes happens on the F2 menu or possibly clicking individual turns in F3.

Good ideas - I always turn invaders off but hadn't thought of turning NPRs to 0 until later. For me I've only reached an unplayable point twice - I think it's more of the theoretical 'I know at some point this is just going to die on me' which annoys me so much. I'm really hopeful for the pulsar fan remake, the game would be unstoppable with a better interface and no database death

I hear ya, most of it is optimism, but have you had a go with the alpha? It's realllly early days, but it looks like they've got the basics down. In one of the posts (I can't find it now) they said that there's a lot more done which just needs slotting together.

I imagine you could put in half the stuff that's in Aurora and still have a really awesome game.

Just started learning how to play, and I was hoping someone here could offer some sage advice...

Should I go with version 6.3 or 6.21? 6.3 seems pretty buggy in the short time I played, and I'm not sure if the new features are entirely worth it.
