I think all gases affect temperatures the same way, except for CO2, safe greenhouse gas and safe anti-greenhouse gas.
If my old forum game based on Terraforming in Aurora is to be believed (not even kidding), Methane, Nitrogen dioxide, and Sulfur dioxide are also greenhouse gasses. It might be out of date, though I don't recall any terraforming gas changes throughout the patchnotes.
The key is safe greenhouse gases.  Methane, Nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide will kill you!
Unless you're an alien that breathes Methane, then Methane is ok (species in Aurora can either breath oxygen or methane).

What are the current rules for how commercial shipping lines create ships? Do they still need a design of yours locked in to copy?

Nope, they make their own.

AFAIK, you just need another colony.

Thanks for the help on that.

In the game I just started today, an NPR in the next system over to mine was aggressive on first contact with my survey ship. I was no where near ready for a conflict, militarily wise, and have spend the last 10 game years just getting some basic combat designs fielded. This is the result of that much research =/

Active Search Sensor MR9-R1 - Short Range (1)     GPS 84     Range 9.2m km    Resolution 1

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

I send in a spy craft designed to get some good intel about what kind of ships I could expect to face.. however all the intel it gathered before being destroyed by ships outside it's sensor range is that they have a missile ship(s) with speeds greater than 8000km/s..

If they are longer-ranged AND faster than you, you'll loose. So I'd build some kinds of missile frigate.

Yeah I knew I couldnt send those ships in because they would get wrecked. It is really bad that I need to make a missile design now because I have put 0 research into missiles, mostly because I have not been able to build research labs because no mercassium.

Well, you can always station a bunch of those ships on the JP (a big bunch mind you, you won't get many shots through and gauss guns need to sandblast the whole armor) and hope they don't try to cross.

Well I question how many of those missile ships they have, because as far as I could tell (didnt have an anti-missile sensor on the spy ship) the salvos were not that big. So maybe (with the huge blob mind you) I could just run their magazines dry through effective PD?

Well, if they have a missile stockpile somewhere, they can just reload.

Rinse and repeat on the march to said stockpile?

You'll need amazing PDs (or lots of ships) to not take a single hit. Also, they can shoot at you with AMM too, that are faster than regular missiles and usually come in bigger volleys and are a pain in the but to shoot down.

Yeah, you'll be kited across the whole system on the way to their missile depot. Granted, you might manage to hit a non-trivial number of missiles in PD mode, but your ships are small enough that one or two ASMs will trash them, and if they have something stupid like an AMM orbital station (or worse, ships/stations with particle beams) you're going to basically do nothing to those.
