Risky, but by pumping out FACs/fighters to sit at the JP, you should be able to have massive firepower.
AFAIK, Asteroid Miners just dump the minerals on the body. You can pick them up with a cargo hold if it has one. Or you can put a mass driver in the cargo hold and just use that to pump minerals back to Earth.

So I just put them there, no need to order them to mine or something?

Also, do asteroid miners store their own mined qminerals if they have their own cargo hold?
IIRC they effectively add a mine to whatever colony they are at, the same as terraformers do for terraforming facilities. So no.

Correct.

Note that it can be useful to add a cargo bay to them and have them carry a mass driver with them as they travel around the system, so that the mined minerals from all the little bodies can be collected in a single location for later pickup/sent directly to Earth if operating in Sol.

I found putting cargo on the miners a waste of tonnage and unless I wanted the trickle of minerals that a mass driver would provide I just send my small hauler TG to pick up the minerals after the miners were done.

Still haven't gotten around to building warships but had some thoughts.
Would it be a good idea to put one level lower ECM on missile defense ships than the rest of the fleet so that the opponent can fire on them earlier?
Also, is it a bad idea to build really big ships rather than spread the tonnage over many?

Well, normally, your missile defense ships would be set to protect the whole fleet, so who is detected first wouldn't change much. You could make a civilian Rock as mentioned above: a ship full of armor and CIWS. If it's large enough, it should be the priority target.

As for big vs. small ships, well, you need a bigger shipyard for big ship, and they take longer to build. Jump drive rapidly becomes prohibitively expensive. However it does have some advantages, like the fact that you'll loose less mass to armor for a given armor depth.

The main reasons I do it are:
1. To save fuel.
2. To reduce the level of micromanagement.

Well, If the Defense ships would be detected first then I assumed that They would be fired upon first and I could put extra shield/armor on them.
Though I guess having less ECM would only matter if they are not the biggest ship, according to what you say.
Jump drives, Shipyard size and time does not matter that much to me, If the ship isnt worse than small ships or break too easily that is.
I just want a fleet of huge juggernauts wrecking anything in the way, WH40K style.

The main reasons I do it are:
1. To save fuel.
2. To reduce the level of micromanagement.
1. I assume that one of the mining ships have enough cargo space for the mass driver and the rest lack said space. I guess that saves a little fuel depending on the engines and the possible freighters.
2. I send the freighters to pick it up at the time when I tell the miners to go somewhere else, A few clicks more but a minor thing.

So I need to designate the mining location as a colony first, before they start mining?

I'm pretty sure you do. I'm not sure if it will work if the miners are already there (if it doesn't simply give them a move order to the body, which will make them realise there is actually a colony there), and if you send a ship to join a TG that is already at a colony without first moving it to the colony then it will most likely not add the facility to the colony (which can be easily avoided by giving it a move order to the colony, then a join order to the TG).

Hey guys, I am currently having trouble with Task Force assignment. I may misunderstand the use of it, but I tried to create a second Task Force for Civilian ships. So I created it in the "Task Force Organization" window and assigned the Task force commander and the other one through the officer window. Then since there is no actual button to actually swap ships from a task force to another in the Task force window I assumed it would be done through the task Group one. I tried to change it with the Task Force slider underneath the task group name and the location of it but it always tick back to the old one when I close the window or change Task group. I also tried to do it by doing a naval organization but my new Task Force is desperately empty. Weird thing is in the "individual ship window" the Task Force is correctly listed ( As I've put it in the Naval organization ) but the new Task Force in the "Task Force organization" still doesn't list any ship.

The only way to switch taskforces that I've found is to add all your current civilian TGs to new branches under the civilian task force at the Naval Organization tab of the Task Group Orders window and then hit the "make task group" buttons for each branch.

Both TGs need to be at the same spot, then the third tab to the right from the first on the orders screen will let you transfer ships.

You can also click the Taskgroup checkbox on the orders screen and select a TG. Then you choose Join or Absorb TG.

Great, this worked thanks a lot !

And Duuvian I was actually refering to Task Force and not Task Group, but I was almost 100 positive after reading myself again someone was going to mix them up  :P  but still, thanks.

To be fair, it's sort of counter-intuitive for Steve to assign very close synonyms to two distinctly different things.  :P
