I've found some ruins, and on the planet's Summary page, this shows up: People's Republic of Namyangju - TL4. Anyone have a clue as to what TL means? Tech level?

Yes. Which means you may or may not get good stuff from them, depending on your own tech level.

Here's a rough guide for your convenience.

TL::Engine tech
1::Nuclear Thermal
2::Nuclear Pulse
3::Ion
4::Magneto-Plasma
...
And so forth. It's not absolute, but the drive techs tend to be a good measure of TL. TL2-3 is what you'll have at the start of a normal campaign, assuming you aren't cheating in a bunch of extra tech or doing a conventional start. Do note, though, that's it's always worthwhile to exploit ruins, because they give you free installations and can very rarely give you special techs and ship components that you can't research under ordinary circumstances.

Just make sure to have some ground units stationed on the same planet. As a precaution, you see. A totally unnecessary security precaution. Yes.

Depending on the size of the ruins, possibly a lot of ground units. For absolutely no reason whatsoever.

So 5 Assault Infantry Battalions was overkill and unnecessary? Yes.

Only five? And assault battalions? I'd say you need at least two brigades of MI or marines, depending on your GF combat tech level.

Or just Garrisons, if you're low on troops.

These aren't Precursor ruins, and the two robotic guardians were crushed easily.

The amount of troops you need is at least partly governed by how many construction brigades you have operating opening up the ruins, as more brigades mean more chances for fun sized death and agony dispensers to be activated at once.

2-3 divisions of garrison troops usually serves as a decent start when excavating ruins with 5 or so construction brigades.

Make sure you assign ground officers with xenoarceology bonuses to the construction brigades you are using to exploit the ruins as this reduces the chances of a bad result.

Is there a way to reverse-engineer parts that I found in ruins?

And what is the difference between orange square and the red square indicating a jumpgate?

Move the parts to your colony that has your research labs.
Open up the industry tab of that Colony and hit the stockpiles button.
Select the component from the list and hit the Disassemble button.

As long as the components utilize tech that you don't currently possess you have a chance of gaining some research points towards that tech. It may take multiple components in order to acquire the tech.

And what is the difference between orange square and the red square indicating a jumpgate?

Orange is for jump gates that you (or someone else??) built during the course of the game. Red is for jump gates that were found already in place. They're functionally identical.

I watched another empire build a jump gate in my current game (had a nice friendly fleet of 15 ships watching them) and it has been red ever since (Even though we went from neutral to friendly in that time).

So basically it's any Jump gate you didn't build, then.
