I typically use the naval organization tab to organize my ships into fleets with subordinate groups and squadrons. It takes a bit more effort to set up but it makes it a lot easier to identify a subset of my ships and to be able to split off groups of ships with a single click.

I usually create a separate task-force command for each fleet as you only get the bonuses if it is in the same system as the ships. Then using the naval organisation tab I'll set up something like this.
Code: [Select]
First Fleet Command
¦-First Fleet
  ¦-First Fleet Flag Group
¦ ¦-First Fleet Flag Group Escorts
  ¦
  ¦-First Fleet Destroyer Group
  ¦ ¦-Destroyer Squadron Alpha
  ¦ ¦-Destroyer Squadron Beta
  ¦ ¦-Destroyer Squadron Gamma
  ¦
  ¦-First Fleet Carrier Groups
  ¦ ¦-Carrier Group Alpha
  ¦ ¦ ¦-Carrier Group Alpha Escorts
  ¦ ¦ ¦-101st Interceptor Wing
  ¦ ¦ ¦-201st Bomber Wing
  ¦ ¦ ¦-301st Strike Wing
  ¦ ¦ ¦-401st Recon Wing
  ¦ ¦-Carrier Group Beta
  ¦   ¦-501st FAC Squadron
  ¦
  ¦-First Fleet Bombardment Group
¦ ¦-First Fleet Bombardment Group Escorts
  ¦ ¦-Missile Cruiser Squadron Alpha
  ¦ ¦-Missile Cruiser Squadron Beta
  ¦
  ¦-First Fleet Wall
  ¦ ¦-Battleship Squadron Alpha
  ¦ ¦ ¦-Battleship Squadron Alpha Escorts
  ¦ ¦-Cruiser Squadron Alpha
  ¦ ¦-Cruiser Squadron Beta
  ¦
  ¦-First Fleet Support Train
    ¦-First Fleet Support Train Escorts
    ¦-First Fleet Tankers
    ¦-First Fleet Colliers
    ¦-First Fleet Supply ships
    ¦-First Fleet Jumpships

And just get rid of the starting TGs? Or keep them around for non-combat stuff?
Sorry, I do understand the interface, just not not how best to use it.

EDIT: And it turns out I have no idea how to fleet organisation. Does every group of ships have to be a seperate task force?
If so there's going to be a lot of lists.

Doubledit: Never mind, just figured out that selections remain active across tabs.

No, each group of ships doesn't need to be an actual separate task-group. When operating within a system the entire fleet may be collapsed down into a single task-group, when necessary you can split groups of ships off and then reabsorb them when they have completed their assignment.

The task-force is a separate thing, being where you assign officers to receive bonuses to various areas. Each task-group has to belong to a single task-force.

How do you look at civilian ships design?

In the Ship Design window there is a little check box in the bottom left that will show them in the list at the top with your own designs.

Anyone have any idea how to get civilian contractors to make frieghters and such in the latest version?  I have one company subsidized at 10000 and they wont do anything, and so far as I know they no longer need you to design them frieghters.  (had civilian shipping show up in one game of apparently different design from what i had made)  About a decade into the game now and I'm starting to seriously need some lift capacity.

Wait so you could have multiple ships fan out into one system and scan planets and asteroids WITHOUT huge TG micromanagement?!?

The civilians tend to not do anything until you have a colony. Drop some infrastructure on Mars and they should start getting to work.

You don't need to micromanage at all, unless you have a specific goal in mind or extremely limited fuel. The Special Orders/Organization tab in the TG window has a couple dropdown boxes in the lower left, under the heading "Default Orders". Among these are two ("Survey next five system bodies" and "Survey next survey point" for geo- and gravsurvey ships respectively) which will result in a full system scan given sufficient time; all you need to do is send your ship to the system and it will automatically work until all system bodies/survey points in range have been surveyed. It tends to not work for distant secondary stars, though, and for good reason.

Did anyone catch the spambot over on the aurora forums yesterday, It was awesomely bad.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Yeah, I knew about those.  I just mean the whole having a single survey TG for each survey ship formation.

I have a problem with my fighters having their maintenance clocks go up despite being at a planet with sufficient facilities and minerals. Is there some sort of special way to maintain a fighter?

You have to keep them in a hangar (or boat bay), maintenance facilities won't work and there's no way to decrease their clock once it goes up. I usually build a PDC with a bunch of hangar bays and stick them in there until a carrier is ready to pick them up.

Yeah, I realized that after I put them in a carrier. Also, it looks like putting them in the carrier decreased their clock, so everything's fine now.
