Star Wars ships actually have two kinds of shields: energy shields to defend against blasters/turbolasers (and are usually only raised in battle), and particle shields to defend against physical matter; from meteors to missiles (kept in a low-power state at all time, lest some micrometeor punch a hole through your view port).

I seem to vaguely recall that decent volleys of proton torpedoes can break through particle shields in SWverse.

Oh, they can. Shields aren't perfect, and a big enough hit or enough smaller hits in a short amount of time will break through. This goes for both kinds of shields and all ships. Probably why the Executor's shield generator got taken down so quickly; took something like 12 missiles in a concentrated area in the space of a second or two, not counting whatever other damage it was taking in the meantime.

Missile hitting mechanics. :(

Zero speed missiles actually work as orbital bombs but if you deliver one to the same place as an enemy ship - it will use it's speed to determine if it can hit.

Speed decides the chance to hit a target and the chance to not get intercepted / shot down.

Your missile will only be good at destroyers commercial transport vessels :p

Actually, zero-speed missiles no longer work in the current Aurora, as far as I could tell. I was trying the mechanic and the missiles (bombs) self-destructed instead of landing on the PDC that was their target.

Question: Were photon torpedoes used during the Clone Wars?

The reason I ask is because if not, I can use Empire era engines to design them, as I was anticipating having them a couple of levels more advanced than during the Clone War era.

Otherwise, I'm likely to have photon torpedoes Mark I and Mark II.

Agility and Speed is a careful balancing act.  With the new need to develop missile engines prior to designing missiles, agility provides far more flexibility in missile design.

Not unless there was some serious time/space fuckery going on.

I liked this quote from the link above:

Quote
We do not predict that concussion missiles will play a significant role in a conflict with the Federation because we would have to drop a Federation starship's shields before we could use them, and once their shields are dropped the ship would be quickly destroyed regardless of whether concussion missiles are used.

Because seriously, just looking sternly at a conventional federation ship after it loses its shields will destroy it.

The Defiance class can pretty much be summarized as: That federation vessel they actually bothered to put armor on.

Apparently, they're what Anakin used to shoot down that control ship above Naboo. So yes.
Thanks for the info, knowing that there are, in canon, more than one type of Proton torpedo give me a lot of flexibility.  I can also see from both your link and Flying Dice that they are incredibly manuverable.

So, I finished this tutorial that someone linked me, but I kinda have no idea what to do now because it stops right after you launch your grav-survey vessels.

In short, it leaves me with a colony on mars, a geosurvey vessel, 3 gravysurvey vessels, 2 colony ships and 4 freighters. Any general direction I should follow?

Each game is unique in many ways and the game is not railroaded at all. Direction is all up to you. You could, oh I don't know, turn on Invaders then rush and rush to build up a military to fight them and hope they don't spawn too quickly. Or try to colonize as many systems as possible as fast as possible. Or try to make a military fleet of over 2 million tons. Really, it's up to you.

This thread is so intimidating...
How is it intimidating? Size? Content?
