for any large missile cruiser, multiple fire controls are a necessity, unless you really like dumping lots of materials into space for no good reason( or disable some of your launchers).
on smaller ships with less launchers, however, single fire control is a perfectly viable strategy; saves weight, and most likely you would need the full salvo anyway.

It's not particularly difficult to shuffle your FC for a smaller volley.

That aside, I typically go with 1 FC per 12 launchers for ASM, and 1 FC per 6 launchers for AMM. As above, if I need to launch a smaller volley, I can just unbind some of the launchers, and 12 missiles tends to be around the point where splitting fire doesn't fatally cripple my damage potential.

Thanks for the feedback!  :) I was afraid that just 1 or 2 fire controls would have a chance of getting overwhelmed by lots of targets, but I suppose I was just being paranoid!

You're not being paranoid. SPACE BEES.

I custom-built a missile boat just to take down space bees. 10 launchers, 5 fire controls. Sent them out in a pack of four, clustered around a pocket carrier with a big sensor suite calibrated to spot drones.

Worked beautifully. Two missiles per drone, the pack could target 20 drones in a single volley. Found that two was rarely enough to kill a drone, four was a guaranteed kill (9-pt warheads). Each boat packed enough ammo for 10 full volleys.

That was more than sufficient to clean out an infestation, except that I forgot about the Queen. Managed to kill ALL the warrior drones and the pack of workers, and found the missiles surprisingly effective against the Queen -- dropped her shields by the third volley. Unfortunately I only had enough ammo really for 5 volleys. So I took a pretty good chunk of armor and got some internal damage on her, but had to retreat to reload.

My question is this: Are the Queens capable of self-repair and/or can a Queen who has been stripped of her workers and warrior drones spawn new ones?

I'm fairly certain the answer is yes if the Queen has wreck to infect, but I'm not sure otherwise. Maybe it has enough ressources to build new workers though.

Good question, not sure how the game abstracts that. I used DM to inspect the Queen, and I didn't see any resources onboard, but....

the only wrecks in the system are a couple of 375-ton fighters that ran afoul of her meson turrets. Hopefully not enough to help that much (because it'll be a year or two before I'll be back, thanks to a crappy ordnance production system).

Are there Asteroids left? Though I am not sure if the queen needs workers to actually utilize these.

IIRC, there's only about ten asteroids in a very tight cluster around Wolf 1061 (M-class dwarf). She'd been in there for at least 30 years, so I'm hoping those are already stripped clean.

She'll probably be able to make a worker out of that. Exponential growth from there.

Worst case scenario is that she builds a worker and retreats to another system with lots of asteroids.

Ugh. Thankfully, the other system where I've got known Swarm only has about 40 asteroids, and they're mostly tiny.

Although, asteroids seem to have much higher potentials than in previous versions. Here's the survey from a single asteroid in YZ Ceti (looks kind of like debris from an early inner planet?):

Duranium: 1,155,200 (0.8)
Neutronium: 260,100 (0.5)
Corbomite: 193,600 (1)
Tritanium: 921,600 (0.7)
Mercassium: 592,900 (1)
Sorium: 810,000 (0.7)
Uridium: 52,900 (0.7)
Corundium: 240,100 (0.9)
Gallicite: 62,500 (0.6)

That's better than many most moons and quite a few planets.

I wonder if that asteroid is even big enough to hold all that inside it.

that is one of the best mineral reports I have ever seen... even the smaller deposits are going to last a few years, while other will last decades. and all at high accessibility! truly a wonder.

Yes, I'd send asteroid miners and/or start shipping automines as soon as it is in "range".
