Can missiles fire at targets further away than their fire control? I'm building a fighter and need to know how much space to devote to fire control, with the main active sensor on an armored carrier.
Do... do you really need to ask that?

Here's a test: try firing a missile at a ship outside the range of your fire control, see how that works out.

Well, to be fair:

You can set a way point and fire missiles with an active sensor package at the way point. What they should do then is if they cross a target their sensors can pick up, the missiles will divert and attack. (might need to remove the way point for that to happen? This is only theory from what I've read of things other people have done.)

But otherwise, no, for ship/fighter-guided missiles, the enemy target must be within range of the missile FC, minus the distance of ECM interference, if any.

No they won't divert, they will travel to the waypoint and then wait there trying to spot something with their sensors. If they do spot something they will then lock onto it and try to impact.

Actually if you remove the WP that was targeted (had to be targeted) the missiles will go into "lost target" mode and if they have sensors keep tracking for targets while continuing flight.

How I actually use siege mirvs infact.

seeing how efficient other people are at this game compared to me makes me jelly.

Don't worry, you will never be as jelly as me. I don't even know what to do one bit. Furthest I ever got was setting up a game :(

I just discovered my first NPR less than a year in to my current game. They are only one jump away from me, but it looks like we might end up being allies.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Being allies is for pussies, use your good relations to sneak a stealthed nuclear bomber into orbit around their planet then wipe out their military and collect the remains.

Thats what I would try to do anyways.

For once I don't have to be the one to advocate nuclear strikes and enslavement.

I'll be up against an NPR that thinks I am nice soon. But they look like JarJar, no way I'll let them prosper. They are vastly superiour in numbers though, and I have yet to fight an NPR that can fight back.
It'll be fun.

If you want NPRs that fight back, play your games with a 1000% difficulty modifier. Though it can be a pain to keep track of thousands of enemy vessels.

They have hundreds of vessels, that should be fine for a first time. I added Minerals to their homeworld, too. So they never had to stop producing. They are slower than me, and I have not yet seen fighters, which is a good thing. I don't even have enough missiles to kill them all yet. Designing new beam ships will be my next priority.

NPRs don't use fighters.
