Overflow errors are pretty common and fairly harmless. I usually get them if I order a task group to move somewhere at 1 km/s. The game tries to calculate an estimated time of arrival and the number is just too big.

Solving overflow errors is usually a matter of common sense as well.

"Oh, derp, I entered a value that makes no sense. Better fix that!"

If you're getting overflow errors from your ships moving around, I suspect that something in the orders you gave is flawed. I have never seen an overflow error from having "too many ships" in a system, and I'm the sort of person who builds defense fleets composed of scores of FACs and frigates. You should go back over recent changes you've made and think about the values involved.

I also vaguely seem to recall that you can occasionally get conditions within a new solar system that cause overflow errors due to the positioning, etc. of a system body. If you can't find anything else, think about if you discovered a system just before the errors started, then try SMing your assets out of it and deleting it to see if that solves the problem.

In my experience upon generating of about every 50th star system the generation algorithm hiccups and produces a body (usually a companion star) that orbits it's host at zero distance. This is not too hard to correct by editing the database directly. SM mode can be useless in case it was the AI empire who discovered the offending system and not you.

Doesn't that give a divide by zero rather than an overflow error though?

Yes, that specific problem does result in a /0 error. I may have just been imagining a system-linked overflow error.

SO UH. I'm trying to get this game working.

I read the quickstart guide, kay? Told me to press F2 to bring up the Population and Production screen, yeah? So I did that.

It doesn't come up. I alt-tab to do it manually, and the screen is THERE. When I hold alt-tab to try and see it that way, it is... invisible.

I can't use it at all! What do?

Edit: Oh, nevermind. I "moved" it back onto my screen. APPARENTLY it spawned... like, off my screen. What.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

If you have just started for the first time, the window positions sometimes get stuck on where they were on steves 3 monitor setup in the example game, which can be well off screen on your single monitor. There is an option on the toolbar to reset window positions that will usually fix it.

That could be it, I had just found a new system at the same time I gave the civvies a huge subsidy.

EDIT: Ooh, I bet I know what it was. The civs built one of my bad designs on which I forgot something that resulted in it not being able to move. Since they built at least one I didn't delete the design since I would have had to do SM stuff. I must have also forgotten to obsolete it and they probably built a whole bunch of them after I gave them a large subsidy before I remembered to obsolete the design. I'd guess that would explain the multitude of overflow errors (it wasn't just one or two, it was a whole lot each time or else it would have been a minor problem as you said)

So yeah, my own fault and not the game's. Aurora didn't deserve the complaint I threw at it; it's a really great game and I hope my previous post didn't seem to imply otherwise. Especially now that I know how to avoid that in the future.

Good kid. We will not throw you into Steve's private casino/goulag in Las Vegas. This time.

Heh, troubleshooting is what we're here for. If your civvies started using a screwed-up design with no fuel tanks or something, that'd probably do it.

Is there ANY way to resize the windows? I'm only 766 high on this screen. :/

ResizeEnable can resize the windows, but it's not something the windows are actually programed for so it will be kinda weird working with it.
