Where you're going, you won't need luck.

Spreadsheets, however, are another matter entirely.

This game is meaner than DF. Last game I couldn't find Corundium to save my soul. I mined several systems clean and had a few different geology teams searching all the planets hoping to find more. This game, its all over the place, but I can't find any Sorium, so all my ships are running outta fuel. I bet next game its gonna be Duranium. Just to fuck with my head.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

No Sorium, even in gas giants?

Aurora is kind of funny in it's circular irony.  If you were content to just stay on Sol and not develop, then you could survive indefinitely.

In order to expand, you need more industry and ships.  Those industry and ships need more minerals.  In order to get the minerals needed for industry and ships, you need to expand.  The need for more minerals may very well force you to take over another empire's planets.  But if you were content to just sit around Sol and not develop, you wouldn't need to bother anyone.

So Aurora isn't just an Space Empire simulator, but an aggresive, insatiable Space Empire simulator.

Granted, if you're playing with Star Swarm or Invaders on, then you have a legitimate reason to become more powerful, as those threats demand more power in order to fight than you start with, and both can wander into your system.  Precursors generally stay where they're generated: They're robot guardians, with no desire or need to conquer other worlds.

Been seeing this game pop up for a few years, but never thought to try it because it didn't look interesting to me. Might just try it out now.

Well, and then there's the starting NPR(s), if any. They'll eventually find you. And they may be friendly or they may not.

One thing I wish Steve would put in to force more colony expansion is to have massive unemployment generate unrest. Eventually you'd be building farming colonies on barely habitable planets just to get people off Earth.

Depends on the situation. If the Invaders rip a hole into Sol and rape me, they're the invaders.

Really though, this is a not-inaccurate simulation of what will inevitable happen to us (in terms of ceaseless expansion, at least). Assuming we never manage to figure out how to break physics and generate matter from nothing.

Nope, not even in gas giants. There were a few asteroids with some pitiful amounts at pitiful access rates. But I've mined it all out.

in gas giants is where youll find it, send a geo survey ship to every planet and asteroid to and dont overbuild
I haven't overbuilt, All I had was my colony ship, a few freighters shipping minerals between my systems, a couple gravsurvey ships and a couple of geosurvey ships. But I've abandoned that game and started a new one. Got some sorium in Jupiter and Uranus, as well as a gas giant one jump over, so at least I can fuel my fleet. Pity its not giving me much mercassium this time. I swear, every game I'm swimming in every element but one.

If you feel like a fair guy you can turn on space master mode, reduce one of your resources by X and give yourself X of the resource you don't have, pretending your using tech/trade/magic to turn one into the other.

Though the question is if we would kill everybody we see without even saying anything to them first.

Of course we'd say something.

hm. I wonder, how good are multi stage missiles?
I have an half idea of only using long range carrier drones with multiple small ( but fast) missiles released at closer range.
that would allow my fleet to engage enemy fleet while staying well beyond their weapon range, but the downside is that I need bigger launchers, bigger missile controls, and most importantly huge and powerful active sensors, for which I'll probably design a specialized, big and heavily armored ship. ( that has the side benefit of drawing fire).
my ordnance is going to cost a lot more however, and armor penetration may be too low, since I must use smaller missiles.

has any of you ever tried this?
