Redking has the right idea about the direction this should go. I think dwarven first names are just nouns, I guess I'll look into extracting some from the language files.

EDIT: 100 Dwarf names, from Ad to Zuglar. Hopefully you recognize some of them from the game.

There is also "naming themes" for ships in an individual class (such as weapon names, aggressive names, names beginning with Z, etc.).  You can make a suggestion along those lines as well.

Actually, you'd submit the Kobold ship names, and the player would be able to select "Kobold" as the naming theme for any type of ship they choose.  Because hey, Kobolds make good warriors!

It's just because my mineral situation has never been too great with this save, wondering if I should have started shipping mines and colonists up by now.
If I were to build ships capable of moving heavy equipment, it would go at speeds so slow I didn't even remember them.

Also is there a way to stop all of my best scientists and (name of current governor of earth) from getting (far too frequently terminal) illnesses?

Yes. Your tech in the starting game is pitiful at best. You can try to build ships that early, but it won't give much return before you've got better tech.
