What the hell is going on in the ocean?!
If you go too deep into the abyss, physics breaks.

They swam too greedily, and too deep.

Off topic, but I'm getting some great ideas for my next fort here, i haven't started a serious one since 31.25 and being laid up for almost 2 weeks from illness + saved up holiday days in lieu mean i have some time, the dev log mentions mine carts will be save compatible so i'll be happy.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the great doomed engineering achievement, ladies and gentlemen i present the dwarftanic.
Plans will be to include a reasonable life sized model including most bulkheads/engineering equipment, including the twenty odd boilers clustered 5 to a room with coal bunkers, screw pumps linked to the main engines/turbine and whatever else i remember to add.
initial half assed estimate puts the total construction to require half a million steel which i will probably add a cheat reaction to give more iron/coal so i don't run out.
i'll need to moses drain away significant parts of an ocean to give it the right resting place. What i will not do is embark on a cold biome since the ocean doesn't realistically freeze up yearly and it's kinda lag inducing (or i might anyway)
this should look good in stonesense which is really the only reason i want to do it.
I'll be Changing embark points for lots of free stuff so i can build right away.
Unless i give up like i have for my last few attempts at megaprojects :/
Back ontopic you're all right about inertial compensation from Trans Newtonian Technology and cargo ships, but i just hated the way cargo holds were depicted on startrek, generally mostly empty and barely utilised.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I was always under the impression that the Cargo room in Startrek is that for the most part they didn't need them and that they were there incase they needed to be used (which was rarely the case).

Most of the main ships in Startrek were ships who could fulfil a wide variety of functions rather then specialty ships... and for some strange reason they all could be used as luxury cruise liners.

Deep Space 9's Cargo holds were basically Warehouses. Oddly Deep Space 9 did feature federation specialty ships.

I always imagined DS9's holds to just be full of booze, weapons and porn/hookers.
Blame quark for this thinking.

Actually they at one time mentioned that there was a hold that was actually dedicated entirely to furnature.

They also shown their cargo holds quite a few times. They were full of crates and boxes (though it was the Hold for the people living/visiting rather then the federation use one)

Well if you think about it, Star Trek didn't need that much in the way of cargo ships, because if they needed something they just replicated it out of raw elementium. Who needs a cargo filled with food, when you can just say, "Computer....make me a sammich." And there was a sammich.

re: the vampire pilot thing, I like it. And if they're piloting a colony ship and get a bit peckish, they could always thaw one out and have a snack. It'd be like driving the world's biggest refrigerator stocked with pizza rolls.

Nah, if you're shipping people then every person is worth a fortune.  More likely some of the crew would be thawed out during the cruise portion of the flight and drained to keep them alive and the vampire fed.  You don't just eat colonists.  That's like carrying a wallet full of cash to the bank and eating bills as you go.

You gotta figure the law of averages says if you're carrying 100,000 colonists in cryo storage, you're probably going to lose a few in transit to pod malfunction....maybe that's the dirty little secret the colonial authorities are covering up -- those "accidental deaths" aren't so accidental.

Yah, but humans are such efficient bloodpacks. They even make more if you don't go overboard!

You know those people who come out of transit with the shakes, pale as a ghost and having needed multiple rounds of 'injections' to the neck? Yah, we blame the pilot for those ones.

It wouldn't be so much breathing water as breathing oxygenated, nutrient-rich goop (made out of your mother).
