That's... uh... a bit much for a survey ship. Also, wondering why (how?!?) you have IC drives but only IR lasers and rather poor missiles. But yeah, trying to cram both survey ships, AMM capacity, ASM functionality, and EW into the same hull is rather excessive, and IMO not a very good use of resources.

Because it's the Enterprise!

As one who often makes massively expensive scouts, I agree with FD. That ship is WAY too Jack of all Trades. It looks more like a combat ship than a survey ship.

Because it's the Enterprise!
I'm not sure the Enterprise would work in a Aurora universe.

You joking, Tarran? The Enterprise was one of the best ships in its own universe and couldn't manage to stay together for more than an episode or two. How many minutes do you think a ship without fuses would last in Aurora?  :P

Even if was meant to be a warship that thing's a mess. It doesn't have the sensor resolution to see incoming missiles. You've got a laser turret that tracks at 20,000 km/s but your firecontrol can only handle 3750 km/s. I can't imagine what you need a hangar bay for. Also, it's really slow for it's engine tech, and probably doesn't need a flag bridge. Fuel capacity seems low for a survey vessel.

And why are your tech levels so out of whack? IC drives and Phased Grav sensors, but infrared lasers and only 11 in thermal sensors?

Honestly, my guess is overzealous SM instant researching without sufficient understanding of the different research branches. And yeah, I was trying to be polite, but that thing is a train wreck leaking toxic waste into a reservoir.

Alternatively, he let the game handle it? I can't remember, but I think I've heard/I think I've seen the game auto-assign tech pretty badly.

However, this does bring up a good point:

What design would best resemble the USS Enterprise-D, utilizing the least research points, and having the most practicality?

Of course, we need to realize one thing that the United Federations had that Aurora's Humans can never have: Photon Torpedoes.

I lost that game because the Precursors followed me into sol, ripped apart my mainfleet and destroyed Earth.

I was under the impression that Precursors never did that.  Hm, it might have been someone else.

infrared lasers

Relax on the laser type.  The lasers in Star Trek: The Next Generation are red (or maybe that was the first series?), ergo they are infrared lasers, maybe.  Although I also remember them being Purple, so I'm using something around ultraviolet on my Enterprise-D submission.

Precursors will indeed occasionally take the offensive.

As for an Enterprise type ship, I've done that. Adding a set of geo/grav sensors to a warship isn't a big sacrifice, though the space for fuel/engineering spaces can be fairly big. It has advantages, though; not only can you hopefully fight off hostile encounters can you can also recall the science ships to join the fleet in times of war.

The biggest disadvantage, of course, is that it hurts a lot more to lose a major warship to a precursor ambush than a disposable scout.

So I load up an old save to with another Precursor incursion into Sol (I am not lucky when it comes to Precursors). Luckily they stay near the wrecks of my once proud Sol Defensive fleet long enough for me to design and build a number of new ships.
Specifically 2 Oregon II class Destroyer Leaders, and 6 Revenge class Destroyer escorts. The escorts only carry AMM's but the Oregon II's each have 6 size 3 missile launchers and enough missiles for 9 6 missile salvos and 1 2 missile salvo using the Opportunity ASM's with a warhead strengh of 4. I order them to go to the area around the wrecks with Active Sensors on. They fine the two enemy contacts easily 1 Imperium class (14,200 tons) and a River class (7,100 tons). When they get into range I order them to fire the salvo.

Now im waiting for the results.

Somethingth Rule of Missile Combat: single large salvos are better. Actually, I think we should try to codify this...

Heehee.

Regarding the Enterprise: a likely substitute for Photon Torpedos would be either a) Plasma Torpedos or b) Particle Beams. As for phasers, they were visible to the naked eye, so Visible Light lasers. Simple Duranium armor and minimal engineering spaces and damage control, plus reactors and engines with maximum possible chance of explosion would round it out.

You forgot one:

Thou shall not use extremely slow missiles.

Are laser warheads "obscenely overpowered" broken or "just not working" broken?
