Not sure if any of you would be interested, but this game is a really complex open source MMO RTS that's quite a lot like Aurora. I've been having fun with it, but it wouldn't hurt to have more players (been getting a good many people joining apparently, but quite a few don't stick around due to the complexity of it).

You have to design all your parts, manufacture them, and put them together in a ship design just like Aurora. You even design all your buildings to build on the planet, and space stations, and even alloys to make the stuff from using various minerals.

Not a game for everyone, but I bet Aurora players would like it :)

Hmm...guess I was thinking more of "fast, plasma cannonades, salvage module".

But if you tractor them back you get to take them apart!

Wonder how it would fare against anti-pirate frigates though. 100 engines should make it crazy fast enough to avoid them, but also seems highly inefficient. I was thinking something small and fast (under 10,000 tons)

Doesn't have to run at 100% speed all the time, just when it's towing a massive freighter. 100 was just an off-the-cuff number, I'm sure beyond a certain point you get diminishing returns on engine power that wouldn't warrant more engines. Still if you want a quick raider boat, go with plasma cannonade, microwave emitter optional to fry sensors, low thermal engines and cloaking. You could pop in and fry the freighter's sensors (if any) then blast it apart. The problem with your approach is that a salvager + cargo hold is going to take up a lot of tonnage. a LOT.

I've never used microwave, how good are them?

They're good at frying electronics! If the ship doesn't have shields the damage goes straight to electronics and it really doesn't take much to blind them. Shields will absorb microwave emitters though iirc, but at the cost of shield power. Been a bit since I tried it out.

They do triple damage against shields, I believe.
Also stack on the ECM for the raider ship. ECM is good fun.

I didn't know raiding shipping was a thing.  Hmm, would this do?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Takes more crew than my biggest PDC, which has three times the tonnage.

On an unrelated note, what are some fun real-world names that your commanders have generated with?  I currently have a John Kerry, a Joseph Smith, and a Christopher Nolan.

Do PDCs armed with beams suffer an atmosphere reduction affect? Also, why can't PDCs equip shields? I want my nigh unkillable 90,000 ton forever regenerating PDC.

They do if the planet they're on has an atmosphere. Given sufficient tech you can build a huge beam PDC of death on the moon. Not sure about shields.

CIWS seem to be an exception to this rule, which makes some sense.

I believe shields don't work when the planet has enough atmosphere to cause problems for beam weapons. they will work if you place your PDC on an airless asteroid or so.
