Yeah, but with a brigade of HA, you can counterattack the moment you open a vault and have the battle finished by the end of the next cycle. If you let them keep attacking you, there is the danger of collateral damage destroying some of the stuff you've recovered. Quite apart from that, HA are actually useful in other roles, whereas Garrison battalions are basically only good for sitting on listening posts to prevent them from being captured without a fight. One you have Marines, forget it, GU build times aren't long enough to justify producing anything other than HQs, 'rines, HA, and replacements.

Well, yeah, that goes without saying.  :P

As for why I'm building 6k+ ton scouts:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I crept in-system with it, shut down my drive, and then used one of my fast scouts to lure them out from the 2nd and 3rd planet. They passed by me at ~53m km without detecting the stealth scout. That alone is worth the investment, as I have a full sensor readout on them before my attack groups jump in.

I usually play my games with a lot of RP so I always have defensive garrisons on my worlds even if the AI never invades and all of my capital ships have marine detachments for shipboard defense.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I garrison my colonies... with a division or two of marines and an attached brigade of HA per division, once they get to the 100m mark. Before that, they typically have somewhere between a few battalions and a few brigades of marines, depending on how close they are to enemies, and how large their population is. And who says AI never invades? I specifically recall one of Steve's AARs has a chapter where a newly discovered NPR is fighting off Precursor ground troops and ships.

((Okay yeah, it isn't exactly the biggest worry, but hey, RP value))

The main reason I have troops on mars is because they keep getting upset because there isn't enough military presence... so I quash that with overpowering military force.

Indeed. You can't beat garrisons for defense on the basis of cost per effectiveness.

However, given the lack of transport ship availability, 1 heavy assault batallion was the best choice!

Anwyay, after running some numbers, I can equip my FACs with a size 80 box launcher, or two size 40, or...

I am able to develop missiles for them as well, but what do you guys think would be the most effective? They're meant to operate for local system defense, so deep space tracking stations will identify contacts, then FACs will be scrambled to intercept at short range (20m KM or less). Assume an unlimited supply of planet based missiles, so infinite reloads. Size 80 monster armored missiles? Size 40 missiles that split into a bunch of tiny ass high strength size 4 missiles? Some combination of the above?

Don't bother. Just go with something between size 4 and size 16. More launchers is better, and as your tech gets better, you'll be able to fit absurd warhead strength in small missiles.

I do:

Size 2 AMM/AFM
Size 6 ASM
Size 100 Drones and planet annihilators.

To deploy ASMs against enemy ships in a planet-defense role, fighters.

I might not ever get around to actually USING those big ones, of course.

What the heck do laser warheads do? I can't find anything on them from the wiki.

From what I gathered from the aurora forums, they're apparently leftover from some tests that Steve did, and aren't fully implemented. If they do work though, I'd imagine they'd allow your missiles to have the same damage profile as a laser (narrow, deep penetration).

It covers the system map and prepares for economics. I'm editing and saving next part now. Also, I explain the black bars and a few other things.

EDIT: On a roll! Part 3 is up now as well!
