Does anyone else make sure their ship hull designations match up with the tonnage and mission profile of the ship?  Like how my cruisers can weigh up to 10,000 tons, but anything over is a battleship (unless it's a carrier), etc.
Steve has address this, and it makes a fair amount of sense. There has never been set ratio between tonnage and ship class. Ship class and tonnage has increased rather steadily through the years. An 18th century battleship, doesnt even way half as much as a 21st century battleship, so on.

So, the top range of tonnage you can produce, could sanely  be named battleships or carriers.

True. The original "cruiser" was a mission role, not a ship class. It meant any warship that could carry enough supplies and firepower to operate independently for an extended period of time. The typical usage was to patrol waters in far-off stations where you weren't likely to be fighting large naval battles, but rather acting as the local "stick" of your empire against the natives/pirates/raiders/what-have-you.

Likewise, "destroyer" is a shortened form of "torpedo boat destroyer". Torpedo boats were designed to be the cheap but effective way to counter large, slow warships. In order to defend the large, slow capital ships, navies designed small ships with enough speed to intercept torpedo boats and enough firepower to destroy them before they could reach the big ships. Destroyers could be clippers, frigates, corvettes, etc. Eventually, a dedicated ship class evolved specifically for the destroyer role, although the focus in the 20th century was hunting and destroying submarines rather than torpedo boats.

What's the errors? Could be an installation problem if it's happening right away. Generally, NPR-related issues don't crop up for at least 10-15 years, until they get spacefaring.

The errors i'm getting are :
Error 3061 was generated by DAO.Database (and something in french about "not enough parameters. 1 expected")
Error 91 was generated by Aurora (and in french "variable object or variable block With undefined")

Both are spammed and i need to click "Ok" many times to get rid of them.

Oh and while i was testing again, another message appeared :
Error 3075 was generated by DAO.Database (and in french "syntax error (comma) in the expression 'SystemID = 4800 and Xcor^2 > 3.47113860684374E+19")

(edit : i assume that it's using french because that's my system language, what i wrote is a rough translation)
(edit2 : i'm using the version 5.60 and a fresh install)

Your system language is in french? I recall that Aurora has a problem on systems that use "," instead of "." as a decimal separator.

Aha! seems like this was the issue, i changed the language settings and no more errors.

So, seeing as the old community game seems to have died, I'm considering taking another stab at an LP. Like my last one (the four nation competitive LP), I don't trust NPRs to provide a fair fight. However, it doesn't look like there's enough participation to handle a multiple nation game like my last one, so I was considering doing a USA/USSR game modeled after Steve's, with posters controlling the actions of the US and me controlling the USSR. Like my previous game I'd probably have an peace zone around Earth (enforced by the UN), and let the nations bicker over planets/jump points.

Any thoughts on this? Interest?

Anyone? Since my last LP died due to lack of participation I'd like to know if there's interest before I start anything.

I'd be in, but not much. You should do it as a suggestion games, that require less investment from players.

Agreed. Doing it as something where you're running an empire based on suggestions from players, but on your own discretion for non-central things would be the best route, especially if you're going to be running another empire(s) in opposition to the player side.

Except that the cabinet is full of xenocidal lunatics. So yeah, pretty much.

Also, I've been doing something strange and disturbing: cautiously investigating possible Precursor systems with scout ships supported by full squadrons, rather than using my survey ships as disposable tripwires.

Yeah. When you consider fuel and maintenance, its probably cheaper to just use disposable survey ships. But I sometimes use survey escorts for RP reasons, and because the smaller scale fights can be fun.

Forget that... i'm getting errors again. I tried starting a new game without NPRs and no errors this time.

Edit : I spoke too soon... i went to assign commanders and got a endless stream of errors when going to "civilian administrators"...  I think that's it for me.

I normally start with one shot suicide scouts, but when I feel fancy I build a explorer ship that lauches drones at interesting planets, normally with 36 months of lifetime or more, then move on.

It´s to the games credit that exploration can be done in so many different ways, some with long term benefits, others cheap, some a middle ground (build a sensor-station and tug it over there? Suicide scout? Build a interlocked network of sleeper-drone? Mine the area with sensor-mines, near every planet you care about and jump points? Build a engineless chunk of metal with a few carrier bays near its sun, fitted with large sensors and box-lauching-fighters (run up, fire 50X missiles, return to base to reload/refuel)? Defense satellites? Active fleet? Tiny fighter-manpods on the planet + army?)

You could always try running an earlier version, if you haven't already. You could also register on the Aurora forums and report your issues, as pretty much everything to come up thusfar has been addressed in some fashion.

edit: One system of mine in my new game has 544 asteroids, another has 803. Yep, I'm building asteroid miners this time around, all right. I also recently encountered this beauty:

Each of them has 4m+ minerals with decent accessibility, one has 38m tons of Duranium, and between them there is at least 2m tons of every mineral.  :D

Funny, my Procyon also has a gas giant with a bunch of habitables too, though they're much larger than your smaller ones and are all smaller than the 13th. In addition, they don't have 2m of every mineral. :(

hehe. In my new game, I have two smallish terrestrial planets around a protostar in a level 5 nebula. I have just finished scanning the gravimetrics and found only one viable exit out of this hole. . . btw in year 3 we were are already out of mercassium and gallium.
I certainly hope that next system behind my singular jumppoint will be similar to your eldorado and NOT inhabited by evil aliens.

(I have now learned to check the planet minerals before seeding them as my homeworld. ;) )

You know there a homeworld minerals button in space master right? It re-writes the amount of minerals for a body to what earth would have in a normal game.

Yikes, just stumbled across a Type III black hole. Haven't seen anything larger than TIIs before. Farewell survey ship, I hardly knew you.
