That's some incredible range, buuuuut, you should make it a drone.  Drones get a hefty boost to fuel efficiency at the cost of maneuverability.  They make great second-stage deployers.  And on the same note, you should really have a higher to-hit on your payload, especially if it's being deployed closer to the target via engine sled.  Consider splitting it into several smaller, more agile payloads that can hit faster targets.

Even better, he already had absurdly high (even for commodore level officers) initiative, so I went ahead and promoted him. Now he's commanding the squadron of FACs that used to belong to Jamie Kirk.

In this universe, he got saddled with an unfortunate nickname in the Academy, or so it appears.  :P

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Ah, well nuclear pulse that's not bad I suppose, though I'd still go for multiple payloads to get more agility per warhead.

Also it's easier to saturate their PD with mutliple warhead.

If you accidentally delete the TG that a ship is in, is that ship really gone forever?

I think so. You can instantly create a new ship with spacemaster > fast OB creation though

Is there a way to combat the extreme time between turns that sometimes happens? Or is this just an issue that needs correcting? I love the game but its frustrating to have to wait upwards of five minutes or more between turns just cause the computer is making a bunch of small calculations.

If it isn't taking the full turn, it is because an NPR is fighting somewhere. I can run 30-day turns in ~10-15 seconds on large (30+ systems, 100+ ships) empires on my 2.4GHz quad core, 4GB RAM laptop. So either you're playing on a smartphone (yeahno), you're playing on an ancient computer, you've got an absurdly large empire with hundreds of systems, or something else is going on, like a program running in the background.

Could you describe what you're running the game on, and how large your empire is, so we could help troubleshoot a bit more effectively?
