I haven't used Fighters yet, but I want to use my Fighter Factories for something.
A few tips for fighters:
As already noted, engineering spaces aren't really necessary for a fighter unless you want some sort of long range/sentry fighter that will spend long periods of time floating in deep space. Even with no engineering whatsoever the odds of a fighter failing within its 20 hour fuel supply is miniscule (And even if one fighter fails, so what?
)
It usually makes sense to design their engines with the +power -efficiency techs. You want them as fast as possible, and if you want long range fighters it's best to give them more fuel tanks. This has the side effect of giving their engines the tendency to explode when damaged, but a fighter with a damaged engine is dead anyways.
You shouldn't give PDCs fuel tanks; it will generate (irrelevant but annoying) error messages. Fighters can fuel from the planet when launched. They can also do this for missiles if you prefer, making the PDC slightly cheaper.
Edit: There's also an engineering space - fighter available.
Also, since a fighter is limited to one engine the smaller it is, the faster it will be.
