Lasers are good for that.  Boarding parties need to drill a hole into the ship, through armor.  If you use a laser, which has a very narrow contact and high damage, you can punch a hole in the armor and let the marines slip through the hole.  Best done at close range as well, where the laser gets a damage boost, so if you can mount a big laser on a fast ship, you should be able to get in close and punch a tunnel in them.

Failing that, if you manage to understand their armor levels you can fire a missile with the exact damage needed to strip armor.  Armor works in square numbers, 1, 4, 9, 16, etc, each penetrating that many layers of armor.  So if the enemy has 4 layers of armor, a warhead strength of 16 would strip a hole in them.  That'll make boarding easier.

And yes, hangars stack linearly.  2 hangars gives 2x the space.

Perhaps I don't understand armor layers very well, but what if the enemy has high-tech armor? Wouldn't a single layer of, say, composite armor be more effective than 2 layers of plain duranium?

So... If I have 2 hangars, I will be able to fit a 2000 ton ship, correct?
Yes. If you have 2 hangar bays, you will have 2000 tons of ship capacity, which will allow you to store any combination of ships totalling 2000 or less tons.

I understand armour layers to represent a certain amount of damage that the armour can withstand, rather than any particular thickness.

Kinda what I meant re: specific weapon strengths. Would a missile always penetrate a certain number of layers, no matter what the armor tech?

Yes. The only benefit of better armor tech is that getting the same level of protection uses less mass.

Hmmm so, lets see..

Using the Laser would be a FAC with a nice amount of speed and firepower, also carrying a small number of fighter-sized boarding ships to land once a hole has been punched.  We're Vikings, so slightly suicidal strategies are fine with us.  Once I get some tech I'll try making a ship like this.  >:D

The FAC would then in turn be carried long distances by a larger vessel with more efficient engines as well as good armor and point defence.

You just gave me the idea to build a super carrier that carries destroyers inside of it, inside of those destroyers are fast attack craft, and inside those fast attack craft are fighters. Sudden surprise swarm during Multiplayer anyone?

Is it even possible to store fighters inside FACs?

If the fighters are small, probably.  If the fighters are 500 (which I think is the max size for fighters), then I would think it would be particularly tough to get more than one in the FAC, if possible at all.  I'm going to try for the smallest boarding fighters possible.

Yep, but not very many of them.

I guess the REAL question is: what's the absolute minimum size troop transport possible?

I'll tell you once I get around to making it.  Just started that new game, and since I start conventional.. its a slow start.

Edit: Though I guess I could try making a test game with the research points to test it..

Do boarding parties need the combat drop module or the small troop transport bay? Thats the question.. if its the latter, its gonna be too big to be a fighter.

Edit: Found it on the wiki:

No idea. Like I said, I never fooled around with troops very much.
