Lol, yeah. It's a big odd to thing about, actually. Alien civ on Mars or Jupiter or some such just relaxing watching us wage religious wars and kill over politics. When the nukes start falling, it'll be pretty fireworks for the xenos. :P

Has anyone read Steve's fiction on this game over on their forums? Its a really interesting read so far, and I'm only just starting Part 2.

http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/board,16.0.html

Part 1 is on the 2nd page

It acts as a decent gameplay tutorial as well - once you know how the game works, this'll help you look at decent strategy when it comes to designing ships and whatnot.  All in very well written story format.

The story starts out pre-Trans-Newtonian, with like 8 empires starting on earth.    However, the earlier parts of the story are from a previous version of the game, so there are minor differences from what we're playing now.

Make sure to read his NATO-Soviet campaign as well. They're both awesome and taught me a ton about some of the less obvious aspects of the game.

Forgot to mention this, but once you catch up on the NATO-Soviet campaign you can give it a try yourself; all downloads of the game come with Steve's current campaign as a save.

I finally got a Missiles/Kinetics researcher after 18 years.  :)

I guess ritually sacrificing all of those children finally paid off.

I always spam academies at the start. It gives you a wide selection of scientists and plenty of ground force commanders to take part in your geology/xeno/diplomatic teams.

I've been getting plenty of scientists. I had a core team of 12 or so before I got this guy, and have been periodically retiring the excess crappy ones for more than a decade. The RNG just hates me.

Anyone got cheap designs for low-tech fighters? Also I have been working on the Railgun a bit, and was wondering does it use fuel to power it, or is a Power Plant required to fuel it?

Never built fighters before, but railguns don't require any fuel or power plants to fire. Just a target and fire control.

So I've come up with a "Battle Royale" scenario for starting on Earth with NPR's:

All empires are Trans-Newtonian but with the following attributes:

500 mil Pop
1 Shipyard
10 Research Facilities
0 Starting Research Points

Everything else the same.

I'm currently working on setting it up right now, the contenders will be:

United States (Who I will be playing as)
European Union
China
Japan
Russia
Iran
India
Mexico

Although everyone technically starts with the knowledge of how to make ICBMs, no one has any starting PDC's with 'em.  All we have are Trans-Newtonian ground troops.

I'll post more info on this once I get it all set up.

Actually, railguns do require power to fire. The only non-missile weapons that don't need any power are Gauss cannons.

Oh well that sucks.  Even though I made everyone have no research points to begin with, they all got ships :(

And man do turns take a while.  XD

I don't think NPRs respect the starting research.

Someone started a game with like 18 empires on earth.  They all immediately started with ships (using starting RP and BP) and proceeded to bomb the crap out of each other within days.  Sounds glorious.

Anyone got unconventional design ideas?  We've all seen the same big single-purpose warships.  I'm thinking about suicide fighters with one massive laser and little else, designed to punch narrow holes in armor at minimum range.  Against light armor they should shred through internals, and against heavy armor it should make a nice indent for marines to start drilling.
