Huh, apparently I hadn't researched that.  I am sure I did.  I should pay more attention to what I am doing.

Gah I am stupid, thank you and now you may start ignoring me.  :-[

Has anyone read Steve's fiction on this game over on their forums? Its a really interesting read so far, and I'm only just starting Part 2.

http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/board,16.0.html

Part 1 is on the 2nd page

It acts as a decent gameplay tutorial as well - once you know how the game works, this'll help you look at decent strategy when it comes to designing ships and whatnot.  All in very well written story format.

The story starts out pre-Trans-Newtonian, with like 8 empires starting on earth.    However, the earlier parts of the story are from a previous version of the game, so there are minor differences from what we're playing now.

Make sure to read his NATO-Soviet campaign as well. They're both awesome and taught me a ton about some of the less obvious aspects of the game.

I'm currently reading the 'The Stars at War' series,
based on the Starfire 'play-by-paper-spreadsheet'-game,
which Aurora is again based on IIRC.
When I finish those, I'll start on Steve. :)

It made me download the (current version) files and try to play this again.
(Also had only access to a tiny netbook recent months... and small screens pretty much spoil Aurora's playability. :P Anyhow, I've now got my bigboy running again so... "Full speed ahead, Mr. Zulu !")

No need for jumpgates to move between systems if you have jump engines/jump tenders. However civilian shipping lines will only move between systems that have a jump gate on both sides of the jump point.
Sometimes my civvies jump without a return gate, the morons.  So I never leave infrastructure anywhere without a full gate connection.

I'm actually going to start my new pre-trans-newtonian campaign with multiple empires on Earth, like Steve's Campaign.  Gonna be interesting, me hopes.

I believe that if you do that, you have to run each of them yourself. That is what he did, as the game mechanics (IIRC) don't work that well with multiple factions living on the same world.

Yeah, NPCs take one look at earth and say "Hey look! This planet is full of enemies! I better bomb it!"

Yeah you can put npr's on the same planet as you, but they don't realize their own colony is on the same world and so is effected by fallout.

They realize it enough to give you a relations penalty for having ships in their home system, though!

I've heard you can manage one NPR on your homeworld with heavy use of diplomatic teams, but that's the limit. And yeah, that game writeup is what inspired my LP attempt.

Of course, Global Thermonuclear War would be an interesting start condition in and of itself. Set up a dozen or so pre-TN player controlled empires, have them nuke the shit out of each other, and take control of whichever one is left standing.

It'd be cool to gen 10-15 NPRs on Earth, all human factions, China, USA, Russia, etc, and watch them nuke each other to hell while we're based on Mars. Play a game as aliens hidden on Mars. :P If the humans don't survive, oh well. If they do,

!!FUN!!
