Drop a geosurvey team on it and they will find at least some minerals. You will want them to have a combined skill of 140+ as that is the optimum point for avoiding the survey complete too soon and higher bonus just uncreases the speed of finds.
A colony without minerals is not neccesarily a bad thing as you can use the population tha would have been working your mines to work in other facilities.

Mercury isn't too bad to colonize but venus is a very long term prospect for terraforming as you have to remove all that atmosphere. Remeber if colonizing mercury that you need to put anti-greenhouse gass into the atmosphere to cool it down.

Ok, how do I go about dropping a team onto it?

I've got a team made (although I could only drum up 65 points), now what? Get a ship and transfer 'em over there?

you can cheatput it one directly there:

disband your team, add a colony on mars, go to mars teams tab in the f2 screen, reform your team.

it would be better if you do that on some other useless rock first; but not asteroids! asteroids take a lot of time to survey. planets are the best for training.

I already have two survey ships flying around surveying asteroids autonomously anyways.  I'll toss 'em on Mars

Now heres a new question: How do I get my shiny new mining ship to go orbit around asteroids?

Alternativly if you actually want to move a team around, open up the taskgroups window, select the ship you want to use, select the colony the team is on and issue the pickup team order(rember to select the team from the list shown after selecting the order). To drop off a team select the body you want to drop of the team on and use drop off team order. The drop off site does not need to already have a colony present as one will automatically be created when the team is dropped off.

If you want to train up a team fairly fast, have them survey any moons of 0.1 or above gravity first, then any empty planets finishing with the planets that already have minerals/earth. Moons below 0.1 gravities take significantly longer to survey and asteroids/comets normally take a very long time for small returns as the ammount of minerals found in a single deposit is scaled by the gravity of the body.

Now heres a new question: How do I get my shiny new mining ship to go orbit around asteroids?

Use the move to order not the orbit order if you want the ships to actually do work. Also remember to make a colony on the asteroid you are going to mine which is where the minerals will be deposited for later pickup/mass drivering.

Besides, do remember you don't actually need people for mining a planet. Just drop auto mines and mass drivers, and you're set on a mining colony that doesn't need colonists.

Ooh I didn't know that.. I had built a ship that could mine and transport the ore, as I figured it got mined directly into the ship's cargo hold.  Guess I was thinking too much like EVE online.. lol

if you have a cargo in your miners you can conveniently use them to carry the mass driver around with them at all time :D

What are colliers for?
Is it for mining ships, or are they tenders for your fleet?

True, though at this stage of the game, 5 cargo holds is alot.. I'll look into it.

I've actually started a new game beginning in 2012 with conventional era technology >:D

I think you can also use five miners carrying  1/5 of mass driver each

You can, but I personally find in much more efficient to just use 5 cargo holds. Greatly simplifies the logistics. Also, one freighter with five holds is going to be a good bit cheaper than five freighters with one hold.
