Aye, Conventional is not something to start off on. Also, don't waste your time on tiny deposits. Geosurvey a few neighboring systems and send in a geologist team to find more from each moon/planet, and colonize only astros with high levels of minerals.

No point ferrying around mines only to have to remove them soon after.

I only did a conventional start in my LP because I thought it would be interesting, and I hadn't done one in ages. I normally don't play them.

If you want a more exciting game you need to get out and explore a lot. You either need to find the NPR you started with (assuming you started with one), generate an NPR by exploring systems, or generate some other threats (also by exploring systems). If you sit back in Sol the game can get very boring, because the game doesn't generate threats for you, you have to go out looking for them. Well, except for the Invaders if you have that on - but I wouldn't suggest that as every time I've enabled them they inevitably pop up on my capital and eat me before I have a chance, although that might be bad luck on my part.

It's not like most other games where if you turtle up the enemy will eventually come for you. If you turtle up in Aurora you just get super advanced, and then when you get bored and decide to go out you find enemies that can't compete with your super technology.

Or alternately, crank out half a dozen big asteroid miners (~120,000 tons) and go strip mine the little asteroids, then work your way up to the bigger ones. Survey and geo-team the better planets and moons, but if they have any significant deposits or Duranium or Sorium on them, leave them for the civvies to mine, then buy their output. Hell, they'll even colonize the bigger asteroids.

If you've got 18 labs, then keep building more. You want at least 30-40 to be able to take full advantage of your scientists. And if you don't have many scientists and/or they're crap, build another level or two of Military Academy to increase your recruitment rate.

Another thing to do if you find your research languishing, is to research the first couple of levels of improved research rate. This will give you a big boost much quicker than the time it would take to build enough research labs to match the increase, particularly if like my current game you suffer from an acute Mercassium shortage and can't afford to build many labs.

I like to start with few system, no starting npr and 100% npr spawn rate (they still require an habitable planet)

that way I can control their expansion if they start to lag out  :P (also, there is much more to do :D)

Turn off all the extra enemies alongside the NPRs, a certain one will probably come knocking and eat you alive very, very quickly.

Make sure at the very least the Invaders are off.

They can show up in Sol, even if you never left the system, and wipe you out quickly.

The other two, not really super dangerous, in my experience, as they tend to keep to themselves in their own systems.

HOW CAN YOU MESS UP THE INSTALL.

HOW.

IT'S SO SIMPLE WITH ONLY 3 STEPS.

HOW.

I have that problem a bit.

I don't really know. Maybe it has something to do with having to set up a dummy folder for me to extract everything to, and then pasting it in the file.

EDIT: Bugger, looks like restore points are go. I'll try this again tomorrow.

DOUBLE EDIT: Slap my ass and call my Sally! I replaced all the files and now it works. ...*Doesn't look gift horse in the mouth.*
