Well, it seems my game is bugging out. I can't design turrets any more. Clicking on create results in absolutely nothing happening. This is a relatively new game, so I can switch to Missiles without losing too much... but I'd put quite a bit of research into mesons and turret tech, and now the second is useless and the former is really inefficient for PD.

When you say "nothing happens", you mean in other windows even after you refresh them?  'cause I had to refresh relatively a lot, they don't all pick up all changes automatically.  OTOH if it happens even after that, or after restarting the game - yea, that would suck...

There's a popup about "project has been created" when designing a part; that doesn't appear and nothing queues in my research project list.

Damn it! My new game, which I'm determined to play in the long-run, has 0 minerals on Mars... Way to f- me over, RNG.

I'm not that good at this and I've played very few games, but I learn quickly and I'm no stranger to the genre. Hoping to learn more, of course. :D

Oh well, hopefully the two JPs in my system will get me to somewhere interesting now that I've shut off real stars... The jumpgates on every JP eliminates the need for Jump drives, though having designed a jump gate constructor as well as researched and designed Jump drives seems useless now... Woops! Oh well, thankfully those 200,000 game-start RP points weren't ALL wasted...

I've got three missile types; size-1 Anti-Missiles, WH-6 Size-5 Anti-Ship missiles, and 7/7 heavy missiles. I have one AM escort, two ship-to-ship Destroyers, and my last ship has a few Particle Beams, never used those before... Should be interesting.

Hopefully my starter ships won't be murdered/raped too easily. Thankfully, they're all waaaay faster than my last gen's ships, thanks to Magneto-Plasma engines... Mmm, baby!

All my ships have 5.5k to 7k speed, though my scout has nearly 12k speed. ;) Beats the shit out of 3k speed from my last 3 games!

Anyway, it is the hope of the Terra Imperium that our Eagle scouts find bountiful systems devoid of hostile presence, and if such beings are encountered, that our 16,000 ton 'Annihilator M-1' Destroyer, the 5,100 ton 'Barrage AM-1' Anti-Missile Escort, the 6,500 ton 'Longsword PB-1' Particle-Beam Corvette, and the 'Pegasus M-1' Missile Cruiser.

Umm, one question... How do I use a FAC? I've got one designed, a missile-bearer, but I've never figured out how to use fighters, drones, or FAC... I've read them used in various game stories and playthroughs, but never figured it out myself. Hell, never been able to build a fighter, either. Can't keep the damn things below 300-400 tons, even with minimal features...

Tried another virtual desktop program, still no luck, the commander screen still starts at my native resolution, nothing i can do increases the size so i can scroll it, Sdesk even lets me force windows to resize, but it doesn't seem to work on Aurora :(
I think I'll just have to install xp since i know as a fact i can set my desktop resolution way higher than my screen.

Shit... I just realized, I don't have any PD on any of my ships... >_<

Time to build a dedicated PD ship, apparently. Anyone have any tips? Mind you, I'm in a brand-new game, haven't even built any ships yet, designed the above-mentioned already though, and have the PB and AM ships building atm.

I'm horrible at designing fire controls and such, but I guess a short range (10k km?) fire control, or three, four, five, connected to equally short-range laser turrets of some type? That's about as much as I know.

Mark, there's an in-game option to resize. I have a laptop with a small screen and I play fine, no problem. Scroll bars to hell, of course, but I have no problem with any screen, even though the bottom inch or half of my screen is broken and I can't see anything there. I moved my start menu to the top of the screen to work on my laptop hehe, confused the shit out of me whenever I'm at work, wondering why I can't get the menu bar to appear :P

Nice, where would i find this option?
Edit: Dude, I couldn't find a way to resize the commander screen, but i just realised that turning on "reduced height windows" and then restarting the commander screen actually lets me see all the buttons on my 800 pixel high screen, now i just need tosee if it helps with the fleet screen.
Edit 2: yeah it helps with that one too, thx.

Short range, but high aiming speed for the turrets, and high fire rate for the lasers/mesons/railguns. Quantity is much more important than power for PD.

So...I've been playing it a bit more, doing pretty swell, but a few questions:

Where exactly do you make new species? I've designed and researched them, but I can't see where I actually build them (I do have a GM centre on Earth).

Also, what do you use as "ammo" for lasers? Do they require power plants on board ships?

Edit: also, how do you get teams to work, particularly geo teams? I understand that they train when not in use, but I really want them to go survey stuff.

Planet economics screen, Environment and GMC. Bottom.

They do in fact require power plants.

Just drop geo teams off on a planet and they will get to work automatically. Really, that's everything you have to do. Same with Xeno teams. Diplomatic teams require you to assign them in, of course, the Diplomacy window. I'm not 100% sure of espionage teams, but I think that all you have to do is drop them off on an alien planet.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Okay, so I set it to my low-gravity adapted humans, and....doesn't really look like anything actually happened. Oh well...

Anyway, thanks for the bit about field teams. My geologists have been on Venus for three years now and are uncovering vast deposits almost every month.

Is there any way of being able to increase the general research bonus / max lab capacity for scientists?

Training: Have them researching for a while until they eventually level up.
