The learning curve is a lot like DF in that at first glance it seems overwhelming...but as you run through the tutorials you start to see the intuitive flow of the UI and all that jazz.

I ran through it last night piece by piece and am at a point where I am comfortable with the UI and I am just tinkering around to make sure I KNOW the features and what not...you can do it! trust me!

When you put it like that, I guess it must be possible! If I can conquer DF, I can at least get to grips with Aurora. :P

Only problem is I currently have horrific pre-game boredom for Deus Ex, so I'm having trouble concentrating on anything really. :P

Tomorrow shall be Aurora-learning day!

And the idea of having a flotilla instead of a homeplanet like the Quarians just adds to the reasons why I need to learn this game :P

ha yeah...even if I have to anchor my habitat ships around a planet (even if it is merely a rock) that still qualifies for me...I just want a purely ship based Civ that can use tugs and what not to get around but otherwise would (just like the flotilla) strip systems and move on to the next! much better than hunkering down and waiting for foes to come to you...its space for gods sake! use it to your advantage! =P

Realistically the basic need to qualify as a flotilla race would be:
1x Habitat ship
1x Cargo ship (or mining ship)
1x Auto mine (if using a cargo ship instead of a mining ship)
1x Tug
1x Spaceyard complex

I guess the only complication I see is...fuel...is that ONLY made on a planet? I am not sure the ways one can acquire fuel...but a super tanker to hold vast amounts of fuel would be a good idea as well

Also looking around apparently if you dock or otherwise have a ship in orbit you CAN have it recycled...not sure if that's only in the latest version or not...but you apparently get all your components back and a portion of the minerals needed to make it.

The real issue with that strategy is making enough habitats/one motherfucking MASSIVE one to support a decent population and dealing with the issue of getting your industry moved. You will need either lots of time or massive colony ships + freighters to move your population and industry to new worlds.

If you plan on really being mobile, I do recommend that you cheat to give yourself the best fuel efficiency and the power reducing efficiency increasing techs. The fuel costs of moving everything you have will be astronomical (although smaller than you might imagine. From what I've seem tugs use far less fuel than they should if considering the combined weights of both the tugged ship and the tug. Just be sure to not give any fuel storages for the habitats.). Also, don't be afraid of giving yourself LOTS of ships, if you want to start as a nomadic race. It'll take a lot of ships to move everything around.

Anyone else thinking Macross here? Because habitat ships + the capability to launch hundreds of missiles from a single vessel sounds suspiciously similar.

Also, I got that 145,000 limit JD ship to the point in question and it worked fine, so it looks like I was correct that the mass limit for the drive has to be greater than the total mass of the squadron being transferred. By the way, I agree completely, but this system is know hostile territory, only partially surveyed. I've already lost a survey ship in there and my scout I sent to investigate found 3 contacts, that when painted with active sensors, had masses of roughly 3/5 of my current mainline destroyers, before being destroyed without gathering any additional information. As the system's only "habitable" worlds are a pair of Nitrogen/Methane moons with respective temperatures, pressures and gravities of (-184.6C, 0.19, 0.44G) and (-153.4C, 0.39, 0.63G), I'm assuming the hostile forces warped in from another link in the warp network.

I only have one other JP in the system ided, which means that unknown levels of forces from an unknown system and direction, who have Jump Drive capability, are out there somewhere, and I'd rather not give them a highway straight to Sol. Although that is my current longest chain, with 4 jumps between Sol and Niven, so I might build one after I develop defensive mines and WP fortresses.

that would be part of the fun! (for me)

I would likely aim for a ginormous mothership design to be the center of the flotilla with supporting habitats as needed and so on and so forth...I would upgrade my ships and what not along the way as well since my resources should theoretically be vast (stripping systems)

I would set the scenario to sun heating +1% per year (likely a conventional start to make it even more realistic and fun...gotta have a reason to become a flotilla!)

that would be my timer to make my first mothership + supporting ships and then go from there leaving behind my burnt out (or frozen I suppose) homeworld

I would likely find the next system over and settle in while I build up my spaceyard (which would end up being the largest thing in my whole fleet likely) so that it can readily upgrade/maintain my mothership or create another huge one if needed...

my only questions at this point are

Can research happen on a habitat ship or some way in a flotilla?

Can I make fuel?

I played around with this, sadly:

You can't research on board of a ship     -    use the guys on earth for that, use your imagination.
You can't directly produce things on a ship  -  Bring resources, buildings and people along, dump it on a planet do what you need, pick it up
You can get fuel from gas giants/other sources like such

Uncertain if your mining ships can dock and unload into your ship...

Anything can dock on another ship if there is enough HS on the carrier. IE: total hanguar space on the carrier is 500HS you can dock a 500HS ship

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I am pretty sure that ships can transfer cargo...at the least you can use auto miners and simply have your mothership/cargo ship/shipyard orbit the planet (it will use the resources gathered).

as for the fuel...that can be double teamed with the research issue...though both are difficult issues to deal with

not practical...but possible (key word!)

I could haul around some research labs in a few super carriers! >.>

as for cheating I would avoid that...this is a CHALLENGE (or rather has evolved into one)

simply make a "base" in each system you enter...plop down your mothership and research labs and such there while the system is stripped and work from there....

I will figure this out...trust me!

I could also go full nomadic, research a few things but mostly just steal everything from foes I defeat...salvage and break down ships for components and do periodic research 9even nomads advance at times)

FUCKFUCKFUCK 13 THERMAL CONTACTS ARE RIGHT ON TOP OF MY RECON FORCE

Okay, past the first stage of panic at the half-screen of contact ids. Three appear to be the vessels that destroyed my scout and survey vessel, and there are 10 contacts of a new class. The TCS Tennessee is about to engage active sensors. Did I mention that my recon force is composed of two long range missile frigates? With maximum effective ranges at around 380k km? And that the enemy fleet is only 5.7m km away, and that the new class of ships (10 of the fuckers!) are closing at 12500km/s? And that the Tennessee and Kentucky have a max speed of 3946km/s?

The only good news is that my frigates are equipped with massively overengineered "Thor 9" missiles, which have a 121.4% TH chance on targets moving at 10km/s, and that they have STR 15 warheads, which will almost certainly atomize anything small enough to move that fast, if they get hits. OTOH, as these ships are essentially snipers, they only have 1 targetting system each, and have fairly long reload times. Well, if I plan right, I might take some of the bastards with me. And the 1st Squadron is already in position with the Nelson to jump over to this system. Time to roll the dice.

EDIT: Oh and their AS range is only ~65m km, so it looks like their ships are corvette-destroyer types. Probably beam heavy. Edit again. The new classes are only 1000 tons, my missiles should be OHKOs.

Is this range correct? 380k is very short rage for missiles...

My mistake, 380m km. >.<

Also, missiles are away, 600s reload time here we go. That's what I get for using ships with x.25 size launchers as forward recon.

Oh, awesome then. I'd recommend drone+submunissions for these kind of ships though... Mostly because without submunissions they're pretty easy prey to PD if you're shooting a few over engineered missiles.

Okay, this is getting really intense. See, this happened just after I got on, and I had forgotten that my recon ships were on top of a LP...  :D

So they were only a very short way away when I realized it. So now the first flight of missiles is nearly there, and I've detected a total of 112 incoming thermal 14 sig missiles, but I'm only 508m away from the LP and will reach it before they do, hopefully with enough time to make an intrasystem jump to the other point, which is on the other side of Niven.

Edit for justice! The jump was successful, with only seconds to spare. The Nelson is bringing the 1st Squadron through the point now, and the 1st Recon Force will provide fire support. Time to test out my AMM escorts.

Oh, and those absurdly overengineered missiles also have their own thermal sensors, so I'm hoping to see some wreckage soon.

Also, I was considering two-stage missiles for these ships, but with where my industrial capacity and resources were at at that point, I didn't think I would be able to make them in bulk.
