Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

How would one reorganize their galactic map? Mine's so god damn confusing.
Do you mean how you reorganize it, or yours is so badly laid out it is painful to look at?

Also, bah, my damn useless scientists. I have 15 of these guys in Missiles and Kinetic Weapons and Energy Weapons field but 1 in Construction and Production and 2 in Logistics. I have none in genetics and defensive systems, jeez. We aren't even fighting yet.

Hehe, scientists. They all want to be marine biologists. (also that strange aurora/antique scientist joke has no useful purpose)

That's why one of the first things I did was build up to 10 academies. At 50 officers per year I don't get any real shortage of scientists after a few years of build up.

I guess you can always throw the useless scientists onto survey teams (yes, they're eligible for those).

Dr. Lasergood Dumbass: I've finally got a degree in Advanced Laser Tech, even though I have no idea how they work, and I can't even manage 5 labs on my own.  Yay, I can finally research lasers!  Pweh pweh.

Me: Sure.  Yeah.  Whatever.  But first join this team that is surveying the entire Braxis Nebula on the other side of the galaxy.  Planet by tiny planet.  I think they got something like 20 of them.  Oh, and don't forget the moons, I hear one of those planets has the record for "most orbiting satellites".  Have fun!

Dr. Lasergood Dumbass: D'oh!

Edit: Made Scientist plural, as I'm sure you'll have more than one.  You know what they say about stupidity breeding...

I usually give those useless scientists a single lab and a long-term project in their field. Best case, they grow much smarter and more capable. Worst-case, I get a surprise tech somewhere down the line (oh hey, that guy I haven't heard from in ten years finished something).

Any officer is eligible for any team IIRC.

I'm currently throwing random research tasks out to my ~70 scientists and ~60 labs. The best scientists research good stuff while the ones below them take smaller teams and research smaller things.

Also, for some reason my game won't advance in time, it's just stuck.

I only research with the best of the scientists. If they aren't either the best two in their fields (considering both number of labs and research bonus), I don't even care what they do. I have a total of 137 scientists, for 116 labs, but with only about half dozen projects running at a given time. The droves of useless scientists (over a hundred of them :P), get nothing to do at all. I don't want to waste planets with them in a geosurvey team. Only the best of the best get to be in the geosurvey team, which is composed of the five best surveyors in the entire empire.

Yeah, I do have a freaking huge mass of scientists, administrators and offices without anything to do.  :P But since there doesn't seem to be any negative effects for that, I consider that a bonus. It's nice to have a good reserve in case I suddenly lose someone.

Two things about officers in general:
1) Officers with mad skillz increase their abilities faster than those who know nothing.
2) NO officer types are eligible for all team types.

To anybody who may be doubting the usefulness of geology teams,

First they jacked up the corundium accessability from ~.2 to 1.
Done in 2 month's time by a rating 130 team.
Don't doubt the geeks with the geology equipment...

Yeah, Geology teams find stuff basically anywhere and make it magically easier to access things. Anyone who doesn't use them at all is a-... *Ahem* WAS A FOOL!

Sorry.

A great way to get rid of all those lieutenant commanders stacking up too.

What would be a "safe" amount of lasers to put on a ship for point defense? Assuming the lasers were 5cm, and assuming said missiles were size 1 and came in volleys of 40 or so at 80,000 kilometers a second.

To protect a bunch of ships, or just itself?

Let's say the ship went in pairs or a trio, so it would be a group defense thing.
