See, this is the problem with beam ships: The only way they can win is if they're faster than the missile ships, which leads to less guns. This is why you make missile ships. If you don't have missile ships, you will have a hell of a time trying to defeat them.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Compare that "79988 km/s" that the missiles are going to your "15000 km/s" turret tracking speed and "12000 km/s" fire control tracking speed. That is why there is zero chance of a hit, and why the fire control is aborting the firing attempt. By the time it gets the turret lined up the missile is no longer there.

I'm not shooting at the missiles, I'm trying to shoot at the ship.

How far away are the enemy ships? Also, how fast are they moving?

I'm not shooting at the missiles, I'm trying to shoot at the ship.

Looking from the event, the enemy is over 2 million km away. Get closer. Beam weaponry has knife point range.

Oh jeez, no wonder he can't hit. Even particle beams don't have that kind of range.

His lasers in what he posted have "Range 1,400,000km" ???

Yah, I've seen the point raised on the forums before, but to restate the situation as I see it:

Beam weapon ships are completely and utterly worthless unless you have such a tech advantage over your enemy that you don't need beam weapon ships in the first place. I think I've seen two uses for them: roleplaying reasons and to deal with the Swarm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For everything else, missiles are far and away superior.

And yah, I agree with the others on your alien ship problem Jacob/Lee - your maximum range is 1.4m km, and your ships are only 4/10ths the speed of the alien ones, which means you will never catch up with them unless they decide to make a break for a depot planet after exhausting their missile reserves.

To be fair, they are useful in PD, and possibly as fighter weaponry even without overwhelming tech advantage. Good on Nebulas too I think, and if you could just barely get a ship faster than the enemy, a beam iron clad design might work too.

I've had success against equal tech enemies using fast shielded ships with longer ranged beam weaponry and particle weapons. I think my next game I'll do nothing but beam type weapons and see how viable it really is.

Dutchling: How about a power reactor for your lasers? An active sensor may be desired to be able to lock the targets but it can be outsourced to a different ship. Of course civilians care only about the PPV value and the cheapest way is to build some PDCs.

Pure beam ships can certainly work, but you NEED to keep them relatively small and fast (I aim for at least 6k km/s, and wont go over 12k or 16k tons, depending on tech levels/how I feel), and able to handle missile salvos. I go for one big laser as a main gun and then put a bunch of small (smallest size that'll get me to my max FC range) turrets for missile killing, each with their own fire control. In addition, beam ships are very reliant on hitting 'critical mass', where your fleet has enough guns to eliminate missile salvos.

Also going to ask again if anyone has any clue why my game wont give me hangers/boat bays, they wont show up on the design screen, and looking through every research option (after looking at everything including stuff I can't yet research/have completed) there's nothing that will unlock them. I've reinstalled/patched the game at least half a dozen times but it wont show up.
